CRUST: CO2 Capture, Recycle, Utilise, Storage & Transport (Pipes & Ships)
I understand that Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) can be seen as supporting the fossil fuel industry rather than encouraging it to play a key part in providing a solution.
As a more ‘experienced’ person who believes he can still make a difference, I belatedly, have come to realise that despite my previous antipathy toward the ‘industry’, and coal in particular, now realise that they have a major role to play in meeting our National H2 Roadmap, and as our Chief Scientist, Dr Alan Finkel says, we need to be energy agnostic. In other words, to keep below 2oC, or meet 1.5oC target, we need all industries (hydro(gen)carbon, petro-chem (NH3)/m-ethanol, steel/metal processing, power and cement) to be key players in finding solutions.
For 30-years I have been part of the global warming solution and believe that I can now become a reliable source providing CRUST (geosequestration) understanding. While self-isolating due to the Black Summer bushfires with smoke blanketing this small town in the Blue Mountains (adjacent Wollemi National Park) and then pandemic impacts, I have finally come full circle to belatedly realise my true potential to give back/pay forward. Many have read my blogs and hopefully acknowledged my open sharing and now my refocus.
I recommend the Fundamentals of Geological Storage for CO2 short-course because it is run by the School of Earth Sciences and Peter Cook Centre for CCS Research (Prof. Cook was CEO of CO2CRC that has been proving Australia’s first long-term CCS project in the Otway Basin Victoria). The one-week course allows anyone to do it from home, with no travel or accommodation costs, especially given Victoria’s COVID second-wave. Other than providing advice to Eco-Engineering (trusting that my investment will pay-off some time in future), I’ve been stranded in Lithgow (0oC at dawn) and after extensive analysis, become passionate about the science of the ‘CRUST’!
So, I’ve come full circle (petroleum geologist to environmental scientist and now Hybrid) and am re-positioning myself for my final journey.
Please let me know how I go in informing you as I finally implement my CQuest (geosequestration) dream after 15 years as it's been my Trade Mark, email address and business name as I go into action and complete a part-time Phd.
