Crushing & Screening Tip #37 - Jaw Liner Selection

Jaw Liner Selection can be a complex process.

What works fine on one site or on different parts of the same site does not necessarily work well on other sites.

Is the feed material well graded or

  • does it contain a lot of large rock close to the maximum feed opening ?
  • does it contain a lot of fines ?
  • does it contain a lot of clay ?

Are you wearing out the top of the jaw liners or crushing on the eccentric ?

Are you wearing out the bottom of the liners very quickly with little wear in the middle ?

A jaw works best when the chamber is filled / choked between 50% and 75% full.

Higher than 75% full will result in high wear to the top of the liners, potential spillage, high engine load and high stress to the eccentric that can result in catastrophic failure.

Additionally there are many types of jaw liners with some of them including;

  • Standard Tooth

  • Corrugated / Quarry Tooth

  • Super Grip / Super Tooth

  • Heavy Duty Flat Tooth

Usually the Flat tooth will be used in tandem with a Super Grip to ensure the rock is gripped for crushing and not ejected.

  • Saw / Multi Tooth

  • Poor wear patterns through incorrect selection will result in a loss of production
  • Running the liners past the optimum life of wear (more than 90% of original profile) will result in reduced production, increased engine and stress loads
  • Trying to get your money's worth out of the liners by running longer is false economy
  • The correct liners need to be selected to ensure the best production while allowing for feed grading, fines, clay, moisture and best wear life

Hi Aidan, yes we always want to know abrasion content of rock before selecting liners. Customer doesn't always have the info but it helps reduce their costs if we can narrow it down.

Hey Jason, do you look at the material abrasion index when it comes to jaw design or is that just a factor when looking at the steel/alloy comp for liners?
