Job interviews can be nerve-wracking. Whether it’s your dream role or you’re re-entering the job market after a break, it’s natural to feel the pressure. The good news? Feeling nervous is a sign you care, and with the right strategies, you can channel that energy into a confident performance. Here are five practical tips to help you handle nerves and shine during your next interview:
1. Prepare, Prepare, Prepare
One of the best ways to combat nerves is thorough preparation. Research the company, role, and industry trends. Practice answering common interview questions and tailor your responses to highlight how your skills and experiences align with the job. If possible do a mock interview and record yourself to identify areas for improvement. Knowing you’ve done your homework can boost your confidence.
2. Reframe Nervousness as Excitement
Studies show that reinterpreting nervousness as excitement can help you perform better. Instead of telling yourself, “I’m so nervous,” say, “I’m excited about this opportunity.” This mental shift can reduce stress and help you focus on the positive aspects of the interview.
3. Practice Mindfulness and Breathing Techniques
Before the interview, take a few minutes to center yourself. Deep breathing exercises can calm your nervous system and help you feel more grounded. Try inhaling for four counts, holding for four counts, and exhaling for four counts. Visualization techniques, where you imagine yourself succeeding in the interview, can also help set a positive tone.

4. Focus on Connection, Not Perfection
Interviews are conversations, not interrogations. Shift your mindset from trying to give perfect answers to building a genuine connection with the interviewer. Show curiosity by asking thoughtful questions and actively listening to their responses. This approach can make the experience feel more collaborative and less intimidating.
5. Acknowledge and Accept Your Nervousness
It’s okay to feel nervous—it’s a human response. Instead of fighting it, acknowledge it and remind yourself that many successful professionals feel the same way. A simple phrase like, “I’m feeling a bit nervous because I really value this opportunity,” can even help break the ice and demonstrate your authenticity.
Bonus Tip: Focus on the Takeaways
Every interview is a learning experience, whether you land the job or not. Reflect on what went well and what you could improve for next time. Over time, this mindset will build resilience and confidence.
Remember, the interviewer is rooting for you to succeed. They’ve invited you because they see potential in your skills and experiences. By managing your nerves and approaching the conversation with preparation and authenticity, you’ll be in a great position to impress.
