In truth, the blame for the creation of the Crusader 'monster' must lie with the Church itself (although directed against the Muslim rulers of Jerusalem) in its various schisms and guises.
Perhaps ironically, this Crusader monster was ultimately directed more against other Europeans, far from the Holy Land, even against some who would call themselves Christian too.
