Crunchyroll’s Women’s Network is thrilled to Spotlight Starr Strickland for the month of October!

The Women's Network in conjunction with National Disability Employment Month is thrilled to highlight Starr Strickland, Director, Marketing Technology, and board member of Anime Enabled at Crunchyroll.

Who has been the most influential female leader in your career and why??

Right out of college I was a bit lost around what I wanted to be “when I grew up.”?I had a female leader who worked in a department adjacent to mine that saw in me an aptitude for technology and a passion for Marketing.?She opened up doors for me to make the transition into what would eventually become my career path and my passion.?I can say confidently that I wouldn’t be here without her.

Are you an anime fan??What do you think about the growing popularity of anime in mainstream pop culture, especially with celebrities, athletes, and other entertainers?

If I am being honest, I am not an anime fan.?I had very little experience with it prior to working at Crunchyroll.?The thing that truly amazed me (and still does!) is not only the passion my teammates have for anime but also how expansive anime offerings are.?There truly is something for everyone!

I also love the growing popularity of anime in the mainstream.?I firmly believe that there is an unquantifiable “permission” that appears when your fandom or passion becomes mainstream.?You are no longer classified as the “nerd” or “lame” because of your love of that thing.?When celebrities use their celebrity to make things like anime socially exciting, it enables current and future enthusiasts to feel safe to express themselves.?It is a beautiful thing!

As a female in the anime industry, what opportunities do you see for other women?

As more women become part of the anime creation process (story designers, illustrators, marketers, producers, etc…) I see a keen opportunity to ensure that female representation is front and center.?We will be able to shape the stories, mold how females are portrayed, and generally create a space where everyone can see themselves in the anime experience.

What is one piece of advice that you would give to young women starting their career?

I would give TWO pieces of advice.?1 - Be stubborn by knowing your value!?2 - Don’t forget to turn around and extend your hand back.

You will have SO many people telling or implying that you are not capable of doing the thing you want to do.?That is ABSOLUTELY not true.?You just need to find that one person who lifts you up and gives you permission to grow.?Also, remember that once you are growing, it is your responsibility to “turn around” and return the favor by lifting others up.?Women grow by growing other women.
