Did you know that you can cruise the Great Lakes? We didn't either !
Out for a walk today, Christine and I had the opportunity to visit Port Colborne and see the impressive Viking Octantis cruise ship up close. We were both amazed by its size and intrigued by the idea of cruising the Great Lakes, something we had never considered before. As we stood on the shore, watching the ship gleaming in the sunlight, we couldn't help but feel a sense of wonder. This was not just a regular cruise ship; it was a Polar Class 6 purpose-built expedition ship, designed to navigate through icy waters.
We did some research and found out that the Viking Octantis was completed in December 2021 for Viking Expeditions Cruises. It has a capacity for 378 passengers across 189 staterooms, making it a comfortable and luxurious way to explore the Great Lakes. For us, who have only experienced the Great Lakes through driving adventures that allowed us to dip our toes into each lake, the idea of cruising them was something else entirely. We imagined the stunning natural beauty, the historic cities, and the deep connection to nature that such a cruise would offer.
During our visit, we were captivated not only by the Viking Octantis's grandeur but also by its technical specifications. This Polar Class 6 expedition ship is a marvel of engineering, purpose-built to withstand the challenges of polar waters. One of the most impressive aspects of the Viking Octantis is its advanced propulsion system. Powered by MAN engines generating 4 x 4,800 kW (6,400 hp), this ship is not only powerful but also environmentally friendly, meeting the latest emission regulations.
The Viking Octantis is equipped with cutting-edge navigational technology, including state-of-the-art radar and sonar systems. These systems, combined with its ice-strengthened hull, make it well-suited for navigating through the sometimes-challenging waters of the Great Lakes. Another interesting fact about the Viking Octantis is its sustainability features. The ship is designed to minimize its environmental impact, with energy-efficient systems and a waste management system that meets the highest standards.

For us, as technical enthusiasts, learning about these aspects of the Viking Octantis added another layer of fascination to our visit. It's not just a cruise ship; it's a testament to human ingenuity and engineering excellence, making it an even more enticing choice for exploring the Great Lakes.
As for my wife, she was particularly excited about the amenities and destinations offered by the Viking Octantis. The ship boasts a range of luxurious facilities, including multiple dining options, a spa, and fitness center, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable journey. The thought of waking up each morning to a new breathtaking view of the Great Lakes, exploring charming cities, and experiencing the rich culture and history of the region was truly captivating for her. The Viking Octantis offers a unique opportunity to explore some of North America's most beautiful landscapes in style and comfort, making it a dream adventure for both of us.
I am a big proponent of projection, so while it's not in our price range today I am hoping one day it will be. For now, I put my name in for the 8 Day cruise Sweepstakes. Fingers Crossed!
