Crucial Conversation

It has been awhile since my last soft skill training. This particular 2 days training on Crucial Conversation surpassed my expectation. I actually immediately practiced what I learned yesterday and it actually resulted on resolution of many disagreements.

Some key learning:

  • How do you identify whether a conversation is crucial? - It must have 3 different elements: Opposing opinions, strong emotions and high stakes
  • Two main types of reaction - silence or violence
  • Eight steps to be taken:
  1. Get unstuck
  2. Start with the heart
  3. Master My Stories
  4. State My Path
  5. Learn To Look
  6. Make It Safe
  7. Explore Other's Paths
  8. Move To Action

For each of the step, there are specific skills to learn. Will write more about it soon.

If you see this book in store, get one if you find it difficult to have conversation with your co-worker, subordinate or bosses.

These principles work well when talking in any highly charged situation - your realtor, your banker, your noisy neighbor, your teen, your in-laws, the car dealer, etc.
