What do General Managers Expect of Their Racquet Sports Professional? To practice the art of Personal Improvement - and Purposeful Training by incorporating the Learning concept of APT2?
Staying actively involved in Continuing Education activities is a terrific way to acquire knowledge. What happens after knowledge is acquired however, is what really matters. I worked with a Learning & Development specialist several years ago who introduced me to the Learning Concept of APT2 (notice, the acronym has nothing to do with the ATP, and Men's Professional Tennis!). APT2 stands for Acquire - Practice - Transfer Squared (twice!) ... once to your job, and once to at least one other team member.
We can probably all agree that Acquiring Knowledge is important, and that Practicing any new skill is important to building competency and confidence. The Transfer Squared part of the equation is important for the Racquet Sports Executive, for two types of reasons.?
The first type of reason is the most obvious. Your own performance continues to improve through use, and therefore the experience for your members and staff is improved as a result of you Transferring your newly acquired knowledge or skill to your job. Also, what is known as the Protégé Effect - further enhances your business overall, as your own learning and performance is even further improved through Teaching Others (or Transferring what we know) - as is the knowledge base and performance of the person to whom you Transferred your knowledge.?

The second type of reason that makes Transferring knowledge important, is about maintaining a consistent level of service for members - regardless of who delivers the service. If you or someone on your team acquires and incorporates specific knowledge or skills into your club and member-experience - and suddenly is no longer employed at the club - the quality of service experienced by your members may well be reduced while a replacement is found - and trained to perform the task.
