THE CROWN & GREYHOUND
THE CROWN & GREYHOUND - A LITERARY LONDON PUB
The Crown & Greyhound (or ‘The Dog’) is grade-II listed and part of the Dulwich Estate . It is the local for the three private schools in close proximity. Alleyn's, Dulwich College and JAGS bring plenty of pupils and old boys/girls to this pub.
To coincide with the Alleyns' Decades Reunion on 18 June 2022, a cohort of us met up at the Victorian pub: Senaka, Pete, Greg, Arthur, Jon, André, Emma and me. There was a lot of catching-up (we left school 40 years ago), reminiscence and general good banter. I was drinking Pravha throughout.
The pub was busy between 4-8pm. We started out the front, sitting under a big square umbrella. The clientele beside us looked affluent and had names like: Anton, India, James - these are the names I heard. When it began to cool outside, our party moved into a room of dark wood protected by etched glass snob screens . The front part of the pub remains as it was 40 years ago, the rest has been expanded to include a boutique hotel , lots of tables for gastro-eating and a landscaped beer garden built at the back, full of rich young families during a Saturday afternoon. The other (hastened by Covid-19) change was that the bar has become ‘cashless’.
On the literary front, the Crown & Greyhound was home to the Dulwich Poetry Group: Ivor Cutler ,?Seamus Heaney , Ted Hughes , Harold Pinter , Alan Sillitoe and?Stevie Smith have all read here.
