CrowdStrike glitch shows we’re all in this digital economy together

CNN’s PM Plug-In is a weekday newsletter to catch you up on important news you may have missed during your busy day. Make sure to subscribe to stay in the know.

You might not have heard of CrowdStrike up until now, but you probably won't forget the name if you are among the countless people around the world impacted by what is likely the biggest computer outage in history. A single bug in a routine software update from the online security company crashed computer systems like dominoes, demonstrating with a flourish how interdependent the tech infrastructure behind the global economy is.

Even if your business has nothing to do with CrowdStrike, you may still have been impacted. Think of a café that uses third-party online reservation services, contracts out food deliveries or relies on back-end payment systems to process credit and debit cards. Some aspect of just about any business is likely to touch this often-invisible digital network that is largely self-regulating and that almost none of us understands completely.

IT experts say the CrowdStrike glitch exposes how few safeguards are in place to prevent the kind of mass chaos we've seen over the past few days (and will continue to see for at least a few days more, according to Delta Air Lines). Companies need "a better model of operational redundancy and back-ups," a global business expert at Georgetown's McDonough Business School says, arguing that IT infrastructure should be subject to "the same kind of rigor, testing and oversight that we see for the likes of Boeing or JPMorgan."

Stepping down: Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigns amid criticism over attempted assassination of former Pres. Donald Trump. In her resignation letter, Cheatle acknowledges that the agency "fell short" of its mission "to protect our nation's leaders" at the rally in Pennsylvania, when bullets narrowly missed Trump's head and struck his ear. Campaign kickoff: VP Kamala Harris is officially hitting the campaign trail for the first time today after securing enough delegate endorsements to shore up the Democratic nomination. Since taking the mantle from Pres. Biden on Sunday, Harris has raked in more than $100 million, according to the campaign, and has secured endorsements from a number of influential Dems in Congress and around the country. Meantime, Biden will address his stepping aside more fully in an Oval Office address tomorrow night. Here's the latest.

Firework fiasco: Authorities in California believe a 500-acre wildfire that's destroyed homes and caused over $10 million in damage was started by fireworks. Officials say video shows suspects fleeing an area near the Hawarden Fire in Riverside. That fire is one of nearly 70 large active wildfires burning across the US, authorities say, as extreme heat beats down on the West. Full story

Worth a read. "Airlines canceled 5,000 flights around the world Friday, while delays persisted through the weekend and into Monday. Hospitals and government services were throttled, and in some areas 911 communications stopped working."

My family did. Luggage belt to send the baggage through didn't work. After one hour the BA staff at Heathrow started applying tags manually and asked to leave them in an unsupervised area of the airport. Two days, dozens of calls to BA in Italy and the UK, they finally got their luggage. Everything with a few mistakes done by the staff when filling up the reports. They put everything in my ten years old name when the baggage was not only in her name. The BA customer service asked to speak to her (sic!). This is to say that when computer says no, humans seem to agree and play by the book. Disconcerting.
