Crowdfunding - What is it?

Crowdfunding - What is it?

With 75% of our investment committed - why are we crowdfunding? Below is a summary on crowdfunding and why we are fundraising through Seedrs (www.seedrs.com/jugglejobs)

The History

Historically new businesses would present their business idea to a bank, receive a loan and then start an arduous process of recruiting a big team, building an entire product and advertising through print and media to a wide audience. All of this meant that a company would burn through vast amounts of capital just getting their business off the ground.

As banks have the collateral to take on higher levels of risk - they had a lot of control. The only other people who could invest would be a small set of wealthy individuals. An average person with savings was left to invest in property and use their ISA allowance which is undoubtedly a lower risk option but also with less upside.

The Concept Explained

Crowdfunding is a way of sourcing “pennies from many”. Instead of getting 4 x £100,000 loans, the money could come from 4,000 people paying £100. Companies can offer thank you gifts, equity, first exclusive shipments of product, or personalised product in return for the backing. Equity is normally offered for raises over £50,000 and gifts are normally where a product is being made.

Businesses Today

Businesses no longer need to rely on traditional banking corporations to sign off on 2 years worth of business plans. This means a company can launch with their initial idea, and where necessary adapt quickly according to what is and isn’t working for the business.

The PR, marketing and customer feedback, validation of concept and buy-in occurs during the fundraise, often making the route to success faster. This makes the whole process more efficient.

The Personal Touch

For me, there’s something more personable and real about a business that has 4000 backers instead of 4. As a founder the knowledge that so many people believe in your cause, and so much so, that they will put their hard-earned money behind you, is a feeling like no other. If you’ve ever raised money for a marathon or sky-dive you’ll have an idea of how that feels.
