CROWDFUNDING – SUPERCROWD 2024 – GROWING TREND IN ACCESS TO CAPITAL

?As I see a continuing contraction in the capital markets due to a variety of factors, I am seeing more and more businesses looking into investment crowdfunding as a possible or only alternative to the typical investment campaign targeting wealthy individuals and private equity funds. Current or pending funding campaigns include:

·?????? Protein bars
·?????? Coffee and coffee shops
·?????? Restaurant
·?????? Oil and gas field rejuvenation
·?????? Real estate property development
·?????? Community revitalization
?Contrary to most advocates of investment crowdfunding, I focus on the customers of a small business as the most ‘motivated’ to make an investment. I strongly believe that elevating the relationship between a small business and its customers through investment crowdfunding represents the purpose of the Jobs Act in making capital accessible to small businesses and democratizing the capital industry by allow everyone to invest regardless of wealth.
?I posted an article regarding my views on investment crowdfunding titled $298 Billion Short of Potential.
I will showcase my approach to designing investment crowdfunding campaigns at SuperCrowd 2024 on April 18, at Noon MDT, with a presentation titled Customer-Focused Crowdfunding. By crafting customer-focused investment packages that include products/services and discounts on future purchases in addition to a promissory note, revenue share agreement, or equity ownership, a small business can achieve a trifecta relationship of customer, investor, and advocate. Small businesses may also allocate part of their marketing budget to capital campaigns as they build their brand and drive sales.
?Investment crowdfunding has its advantages and disadvantages. It is not for all small businesses. It takes time to complete a crowdfunding campaign, and will not be a shortcut to funding. Raising large dollars in small amounts requires working with a very large investor pool with all of the associated costs of care and handling. Small businesses who want to succeed in crowdfunding must embrace building and maintaining relationships as their most valuable asset.

?Is investment crowdfunding superior to typical capital campaigns seeking money from wealthy individuals? It depends. If your business is solidly established with the potential for high rates of return and the business leaders have an established relationship of trust with a fair number of wealthy individuals, then angel and private equity funding investing may be quicker and easier to complete. However, it may prove to be a higher price of money as a consequence of giving up more equity ownership. More importantly, I often find this question is like debating an empty chair. Raising money in the typical approach from wealthy individuals is only superior if it can be accomplished. The possibility of raising money from wealthy individuals means nothing if no money is ever raised.

I was a guest last Wednesday, where Don and I discussed 'negotiation' in relationships. Our conversation pointed out that negotiation is a form of communication leading up to the start of a relationship and continuing thereafter to maintain a 'win-win' performance of the relationship.
Don is an expert on LinkedIn, particularly using LinkedIn Live streaming to build brands and communities. We will discuss using LinkedIn as a social media platform for building communities that support raising funding.
