Every once in a while, as if by fate, a trove of data finds its way to the web containing sensitive company information. This doesn’t just affect Power BI, but all the major web platforms offering publish-to-web options. Reports are flying all over the place now and being shared on the open web all the time. Many owners may not be aware that this is the case, either.

That can't end well. Indeed, it could end up costing a hefty chunk.

According to a cyber service leader, the average cost of a data breach is $4.1M, and unintentional disclosures are considered part of the data breach family.

If you’re a Power BI admin, here’s one setting that will help you avoid that scenario.

In the Power BI admin portal, the Tenant settings menu item contains a Publish to web option. Turn on/off the ability to publish to the web for the tenant or groups.

There’s some important flexibility offered here; we can permit/restrict this for the everyone or allow some individuals if they are part of an Entra group.
