Crossrail reveals St Giles-in-the-Field

This view of the Palladian style church completed in 1733, probably not seen for a century, was taken from Charing Cross Road. Designed by Henry Flitcroft, who went on to design Woburn Abbey, the seat of the Dukes of Bedford, it is the third church to be built on the site.

The demolition for the redevelopment of Tottenham Court Road Station has also laid bare the backs of the precarious terraces of Denmark Street: a reminder that here once stood the infamous Rookery of St Giles, vividly depicted by Hogarth in 'Gin Lane'. Spared demolition and now supported by scaffolding, this street so loved by musicians, will hopefully have a brighter future when the new Elizabeth Line opens in December 2018.
