Crossing to Building the Global Ecosystems of Innovation

Crossing to Building the Global Ecosystems of Innovation

Reflecting on the first half of 2023, I feel grateful for the experiences and opportunities to travel across continents, immersing myself in diverse cultures and working alongside hundreds of practitioners and academics in Asia, Europe, the US, Canada, Australia, and Africa.

If you are wondering what occupies my time, let me shed some light on my endeavours. As a product and service designer, I have been fortunate to help various organisations, including companies, non-profit organisations, communities, government institutions, universities,?startups, and individuals, to design and develop their products and services, which can be digital or non-digital solutions, including services or programs. Not only do I build their products and services, but I also help organisations to improve and transform their business based on the market and users' insights.?

Given the diverse nature of my involvement throughout the product and service life cycle, my role evolves dynamically. I wear various hats, transitioning between being an ethnographer, a researcher, a data and business analyst, an evaluator, a product and service designer, a UX writer, a copywriter, a developer, a design thinking facilitator, a trainer, a coach or a mentor.?

Despite the challenges of tackling complex problems within limited timeframes, these endeavours are stimulating and invigorating. In business, most clients are more interested in the outcomes rather than focusing on the process, and the organisations' success depends on the ecosystem.?

The term "ecosystem" has become pervasive in contemporary discourse, albeit often overused. However, I acknowledge the significance of mapping out the ecosystem before embarking on the design of products and services. This process demands substantial effort and strong motivation.?

Bringing the right representatives from the ecosystem to give you the proper perspective needs an open mind because it can become a bit of exercise as humans choose those they find familiar and already close to their circle to ensure that everything will work according to their agenda.?

This process necessitates involving adequate representatives from the ecosystem with an open mind. It's important to acknowledge that, as humans, we naturally gravitate towards the familiar and those already within our circles, thereby running the risk of engaging in a bit of exercise that aligns with our agendas.

It is crucial to step outside our comfort zones and embrace diversity in all its forms, e.g. gender, culture, age, cognition, or language, when mapping and subsequently building our ecosystem for our business, products and services. While this can be a daunting endeavour, as it requires us to relinquish our preconceptions, egos, and pride, it is an essential step towards fostering innovation. Innovation can only flourish by embracing a diverse and inclusive transformation process.

"Imagination is not only the uniquely human capacity to envision that which is not, and therefore the fount of all invention and innovation, in its arguably most transformative and revelatory capacity, it is the power that enables us to empathise with humans whose experiences we have never shared." —J. K. Rowling
