As the country continues to recover from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, logistics trade journals and news sites continue to report on the surge of imports into the U.S. In my 18-years in logistics and transportation, I haven't seen anything quite like this.
With the demand for drayage trucking capacity at an all-time high, and with only a limited supply of trucks to deliver them, containers are sitting in the ports and rail yards accruing increasingly expensive storage charges. In some cases shippers have reported three to four week delays in scheduling deliveries. When approached by a few of our customers asking for solutions, our response was simple; "let's cross dock it." As an independent Landstar agency, we have access to warehouses in every major port in the United States and Canada. Combined with our vast network of capacity, we've been able to successfully provide local draymen to pick up the containers and transload the freight from an ocean container to one of our over-the-road trucks, delivering the freight safely, and on-time. Through providing this solution, our customers have been able to realize significant savings and kept their customers' supply chains going.
