Cross Talk: Conversations on Shuffle Mode

There was a time when being on the phone meant something sacred. If someone tried to speak to us while we were mid-conversation, we'd shoot them a quick, stern, "I'm on the phone!" It was a boundary, a clear signal that our focus was elsewhere and demanded respect. There was a time when, "I'm talking," said firmly held children, partners, even pets at bay. Fast forward to today, and that boundary has all but disappeared. Now, we can be chatting with our best friend, ordering a low-fat vanilla latte from the barista, and checking notifications—all at once. We've grown so comfortable juggling conversations that cross talk barely phases us anymore.
It goes even further. I can be in a meaningful conversation, and suddenly someone invites Alexa into it: "Alexa, what do you think about what Bee just said?" We've normalized overlapping dialogues, blending human and digital interactions without missing a beat. But should we be this unconcerned about cross talk?
The hazards are subtle but significant. Constantly dividing our attention dilutes the depth of our relationships. We risk missing important details, emotional cues, and the chance to truly connect. It fosters impatience and leaves us perpetually distracted, reducing the quality of every interaction. The more we multitask conversations, the more we prioritize convenience over genuine presence.

Maybe it's time to slow down. Will yourself to avoid distractions regardless how tempting it is to reach for your phone to add something clever to the conversation or speak to Alexa to clarify a point in a conversation. Let's focus on whoever is right in front of us. Offer them our full attention. In doing so, we create space for deeper understanding and stronger relationships. After all, some conversations deserve more than a distracted half-listen. They deserve our whole, undivided selves.
