Cross-Cultural Insights: exploring CSF leak management at CNS 2024

In March, Medprin is delighted to host the first cross-cultural academic event of 2024 at the 21st Annual Meeting of The Chinese Neurosurgical Society (CNS 2024) in Kunming, Yunnan. CNS is the largest neurosurgical society in China, attracting neurosurgeons from across the country and around the world to share the latest trends in research, neurosurgical techniques, and case studies. With over 1,800 participants, CNS 2024 focused on the theme of "Unveiling the Mysteries of the Brain," fostering invaluable exchanges of ideas and experience.

During the plenary session, we had the honor of hosting a seminar featuring neurosurgeons from China and Chile, who engaged in a fruitful discussion on the topic of "The standardized management of cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) leak."

Dr. Jian Duan, Chief Surgeon of Neurosurgery, The First Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University

Dr. Jian Duan, who particularly skilled in endoscopic techniques including transnasal transsphenoidal approach, keyhole approach, and endoscopic procedures for pituitary tumors, craniopharyngioma, sellar meningioma, skull base chordomas, and brain hydrocephalus, shared insights on the grading criteria for intraoperative cerebrospinal fluid leaks, ?selection and application of repair materials, postoperative diagnostic criteria for CSF leaks, and successful experience in skull base reconstruction. He emphasized, “Skull base reconstruction is the lifeline of neuro-endoscopic surgery. Ideal reconstruction materials should possess excellent tissue compatibility, absorbability, water-tight seal properties. The Immiseal? Dural Sealant System exhibits high burst strength against intracranial pressure. Even under conditions of high cranial pressure, the sealant maintains excellent shape retention to effectively prevent CSF leaks.”

Dr. Oscar?Marcelo?Butrón?Vaca, Chief Surgeon of Neurosurgery, Hospital Barros Luco Trudeau

Dr. Oscar Marcelo, specializing in surgeries involving vascular procedures, tumor resection, neurotrauma, neurovascular decompression, carpal tunnel syndrome, peripheral nerve tumors, and traumatic nerve injuries, also possesses extensive expertise in spinal surgeries. He shared his journey from trying out to becoming a loyal fan of Medprin's comprehensive cranial closure solution products. He emphasized that the best way to manage complications in neurosurgery is through prevention and proactive measures. Hence, the selection of appropriate surgical plans, equipment, and consumables is crucial. In clinical practice, StypCel? Absorbable Hemostat not only achieves rapid hemostasis, but its transparency when used in a single layer allows surgeons to monitor bleeding beneath the product. NeoDura? Dural Patch possesses the optimal structure for promoting dural repair, being softer, more conformable, and suitable for suturing or onlay application. Immiseal? Dural Sealant System features a short gelation time, excellent biocompatibility, and convenient usage.

In addition to the speakers, the session chairs: Dr. Yazhuo Zhang, Beijing Tiantan Hospital, Head of Beijing Neurosurgical Institute, Dr. Haijun Wang, Head of neurosurgery, The First Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University, and Dr. Yongfei Wang, Chief Surgeon of Neurosurgery, Huashan Hospital, Fudan University also expressed their views. They emphasized the importance of preventing and managing CSF leaks, particularly in skull base reconstruction during endoscopic surgery, and the importance of effective prevention of CSF leaks. In addition to superior surgical techniques, neurosurgeons also look forward to the application of novel artificial materials in dural repair, helping them effectively prevent the occurrence of CSF leaks and restore patients to normal life.

Medprin is committed to facilitating communication with users through cross-cultural academic activities. We sincerely appreciate the support from our partners and neurosurgeons and eagerly anticipate further academic exchanges among different countries.
