Cross the bridge when it comes
How will I do it? Will I be able to make it there? What will I do if that happens? What will I do if it doesn't happen that way?
These are some questions we often ask ourselves and others around.
Perhaps, the best answer to these is, "We'll see when that happens". Putting it straight as, "Cross the bridge when it comes".
I look at this with two perspectives.
Stop worrying
Whether it is achieving a goal, performing a task, or facing an event, most of the things we dread, never happen.
We are always worried about facing hindrances or worst still, not succeeding.
And let's be honest, all the motivating talks about thinking and speaking positive and facing failures, don't work.
Because as humans, we do want to be successful and we do want things to work our way.
After running for years after something I wanted in life and didn't get, here's what I learnt:
- Worrying doesn't solve any problems
- It doesn't get better, you get better
- You need to put efforts, so that atleast you know there was nothing lacking from your end
- You need to have patience, there's always something better in store
- When anxiety takes a toll, sit down and just breathe
There are times when none of the above works, switch off all devices and take a nap. This works!
The bridge that I wanted to cross, never came. But the one that came, was unexpected and a much better version of what I had thought it would be.
Hope for the best, prepare for the worst
This is something my father always said when there was a test or an examination to face. That used to work for me, and still does.
Prepare yourself mentally, physically, and emotionally, for the worst consequence.
It's easier said than done of course, but not impossible.
Whether the consequence is better than what you had prepared for or not, either ways you know how to face it.
So that, even if you don't get the result you had hoped for, you know what you have to do. Or rather, you are prepared for what you have to do.
Indeed, it takes a lot of strength, will power and courage to prepare for the worst.
You have to be aware and conscious of the fact that things may not work in the best possible manner.
There is a possibility of struggle and you may have to face challenges, hurdles, and perhaps, failure. But atleast, you know where the path is leading you.
And to put it straight, when the bridge comes, you know how to cross it.
We all have bridges to cross in our lives. Which, when and where, differs for everyone. Let's just build ourselves such that we face the bridges as they come and cross them well. So much so that, even if the bridge deceives us mid-way, we know how to wade through.

4 年This reminds me of the 3 steps given by Jay Shetty in his book Think Like A Monk. Spot, Stop, Swap. Spot the worry, stop overthinking and just swap it by available solution (if not available then find one). That's how it can be analogized. Once again great piece of writing. Keep it up.
