Criticism!
Sometimes it feels like a kick in the gut.?
In the decision-making process — even when all our intentions are right — sometimes we get it wrong.
And in these moments, it’s important to stop, acknowledge, and listen.
But……….Criticism is Hard.
Just thinking of the word “Criticism” can be triggering — causing your heart rate to speed up, your body temperature to rise, and your muscles to tense up.
You may even have a mental flashback of a time when you received criticism — or had to deliver it.
Deep down inside, nobody really likes criticism — when it approaches it activates the same physiological changes in our bodies as if we were preparing for a physical altercation.
We can receive a year’s worth of praise — and 30 seconds of criticism — and that 30 seconds of “perceived negativity” will dominate our memories of the entire experience. (Negativity Bias)
But criticism is important — and it’s a key part of leadership.
And to be honest, in my opinion…….
“Old School Take”?coming in?3, 2, 1……..
Leaders did this better back in the day – it was straightforward, direct, and concise.
When I jacked something up as a Junior leader, I was told about it flat out — no beating around the bush, no carefully worded emails, and no avoiding the situation.
But, leadership is ever-evolving — and while criticism is being delivered in different ways today, it’s still important that it’s being delivered.
Despite the initial feeling — on both ends — criticism is a critical part of leadership, and it truly makes us better.?
