Criticism - How to Handle
Dealing with criticism can be challenging, but there are strategies to help you overcome the fear associated with it. Here are some practical steps:
Dig for the Softer Emotion: When faced with angry criticism, remember that anger is often a secondary emotion. Try to understand the underlying softer emotions such as hurt, shame, guilt, or humiliation. Sympathize with the critic and consider what might have triggered their reaction1.
Be Noble: Respond with kindness and poise. Even when criticized, maintain your composure and express kindness. Confidently handle the situation, and you may see the critic soften.
Agree If You’re the Messenger: If the criticism is beyond your control (e.g., you’re just the messenger), align yourself with the critic. Redirect the anger away from you by acknowledging their point.
Avoid Defensiveness and Blaming: Reacting defensively or blaming others shows insecurity. Instead, focus on constructive ways to address the feedback.
Remember, criticism is part of life, especially when you step outside your comfort zone. Embrace it as an opportunity for growth and learning.

1 年The point that I like most is avoid defensive behaviour and blaming. That is the crucial thing that should always be kept in mind when facing criticism. Also, make the other person feel heard and acknowledge(not necessarily agreeing) their observation. “I understand why you feel this or “ it may certainly appear to you like this…. will make them feel heard and understood
