The U.S. Department of Transportation has launched U.S. DOT Connect to Capital, part of the Access to Capital Initiative, aiding Small Disadvantaged Businesses (SDBs) and Disadvantaged Business Enterprises (DBEs) in connecting with private equity investors. Defense Innovation Unit Launches First CSO Under New Emerging Technology Portfolio

The Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) has launched a Commercial Solutions Opening (CSO) solicitation for quantum sensors through its Emerging Technology portfolio. This initiative aims to harness atomic-level sensor advancements for military applications like PNT and anomaly detection. It will also coordinate with DIU's National Security Innovation Capital and focus on hypersonics and other advanced tech prototyping efforts.


Over 200 Tribes and Four Territories Prepare Climate Action Plans with Support from EPA & Inflation Reduction Act

Through funding made available by the Inflation Reduction Act, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has supported over 200 Tribes and four territories in developing climate action plans. These plans, funded through the Climate Pollution Reduction Grants program, aim to reduce pollution and promote environmental justice. The initiative aligns with the Justice40 Initiative's goal to prioritize disadvantaged communities, marking a significant step towards America's clean energy transition.


DoD Prioritizes AI, Space Tech, Sensing/Cyber in S&T Funding Request

The Pentagon has requested $17.2 billion for science and technology projects in FY 2025, with AI, space tech, integrated sensing and cyber receiving the most. The funding request spans 14 critical areas including trusted AI, renewable energy, and hypersonics. Notably, the total request is 3.4% lower than FY 2024, reflecting a slight decrease in overall S&T investment.

The majority of funds are sourced from the FY24 defense appropriations bill, with additional support from existing authorities. The FY25 budget request aligns closely with the FY24 allocation, demonstrating an ongoing commitment to the initiative.


3D Printing: Air Force Demos Ability to Create a 3D-Printed Drone in Just 24 Hours

A U.S. Air Force-Titan Dynamics collaboration achieved rapid development and flight of an unmanned aerial system (UAS) in just 24 hours as part of the Blue Horizons fellowship. Utilizing 3D printing for aerodynamic components and Titan's automated design software, the team crafted six drones swiftly. Their findings will be shared with Air Force leadership, showcasing innovative problem-solving methods.


FinTech: Federal Banking Agencies Trying to Ensure AI, ML Benefit Most Rather than the Few

The federal government, led by agencies like NIST and the Commerce Department, are aiming to establish standards ensuring stability and inclusivity in AI and ML technologies across financial sectors. Efforts include developing AI risk management frameworks and benchmarks while addressing concerns regarding stablecoins' stability and fostering financial inclusion through technological innovations in banking systems.


Cyber: US Advances on Cyber Goals Amid Rapidly Changing Threat Environment

The Office of the National Cyber Director has reported that while the U.S. cybersecurity posture has seen improvement over the past year, threats like ransomware persist. A sequel to the National Cyber Strategy Implementation Plan emphasizes defending critical infrastructure and forging partnerships. With 33 of 36 initiatives completed and 31 new ones introduced, the sequel plan targets cybersecurity improvements in sectors like healthcare and education while also addressing challenges like supply chain exploitation and AI.
