I. GENERAL EMERGING TECHNOLOGY NEWS

NSF Announces 4 new Engineering Research Centers Focused on Biotechnology, Manufacturing, Robotics and Sustainability

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is investing $104 million over five years, potentially reaching $208 million in 10 years, in four new Engineering Research Centers (ERCs). These ERCs will focus on carbon utilization, sustainable refrigerants, robotic human augmentation, and domestic natural rubber production. The centers aim to drive innovation and economic benefits through collaborative research and industry partnerships.


DOE Announces $10 Million to Support Climate Resilience Centers Across America

The Department of Energy (DOE) has announced $10 million in funding for Climate Resilience Centers (CRCs) across 10 states. CRCs are led by Minority Serving Institutions and Emerging Research Institutions. Research will focus on predicting and mitigating extreme weather risks, including floods, droughts, and heatwaves, in vulnerable communities.


NSF Awards $38M to Strengthen Research Infrastructure, Build Partnerships, and Improve STEM Workforce Development

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded $38 million to researchers in Maine, Mississippi, New Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Rhode Island through the Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) program. These grants aim to enhance research facilities, foster workforce development, and accelerate economic growth in underfunded regions. Projects include algae-based innovation in Maine, developmental biology research in Puerto Rico, and strengthening research ecosystems in New Mexico & Rhode Island.?


NIST Seeking Public Comments On Enhancing Security of Devices and Components Across the Supply Chain

NIST has released the initial public draft of Interagency Report 8532, summarizing a recent workshop on semiconductor security. The report details discussions on cybersecurity threats, mitigation techniques, and the use of automated tools for securing semiconductor components throughout their lifecycle. Feedback from industry, academia, and government will guide NIST's development of standards and practices.


NASA Funds Research Projects Advancing STEM Career Development

NASA has awarded $6 million to 20 teams from emerging research institutions across the U.S. through its MOSAICS program, which supports STEM career development. This is the third round of funding, bringing the total to 44 projects at 36 institutions in 21 states and territories. The program focuses on expanding access to NASA research and fostering collaborations between faculty, students, and NASA researchers in science and engineering.

Microelectronics: Dept. of Commerce Announces Preliminary Terms with Texas Instruments to Expand U.S. Current-Generation and Mature-Node Chip Capacity

The U.S. Department of Commerce and Texas Instruments (TI) have signed a preliminary memorandum to provide up to $1.6 billion in CHIPS Act funding. This supports TI's $18 billion investment in three semiconductor facilities—two in Texas and one in Utah—creating over 2,000 manufacturing jobs. The projects will boost domestic production of current-generation and mature-node chips, vital for U.S. economic and national security, and include at least $10 million for workforce development.


Clean Energy: EPA Awards $27B in Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund Grants to Accelerate Clean Energy Solutions

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has allocated $27 billion in grants from the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund to support clean energy projects nationwide. The funding includes $14 billion for the National Clean Investment Fund, $6 billion for the Clean Communities Investment Accelerator, and $7 billion for the Solar for All program. ?


Advanced Transportation: FAA Announces Nearly $300 Million in Awards for Sustainable Aviation Fuel and Technologies

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced $291 million in grants from the Inflation Reduction Act to support sustainable aviation projects. The funding includes $244.5 million for 22 sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) projects and $46.5 million for 14 low-emission aviation technology projects. Decarbonizing aviation fuel is an important component of the goal of achieving net-zero transportation emissions.?


Quantum: DARPA to Host Meeting, Discussions with Quantum Computing Companies

Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) will host a hybrid Quantum Benchmarking Initiative (QBI) proposers day on September 3, 2024, for quantum computing companies aiming to develop fault-tolerant quantum computers. The event will introduce DARPA’s QBI goals, detail the solicitation process, and offer individual sidebar discussions with the QBI Program Manager.


SpaceTech: SpaceWERX Launches Second Innovate to Accelerate Cohort Focused on Aerospace Technology

SpaceWERX launched its latest I2A cohort, focusing on Alternative Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (AltPNT) solutions and the Digital Spaceport of the Future. The AltPNT challenge, with $34.8 million in funding, selected 20 companies to enhance satellite navigation systems. The Digital Spaceport initiative, with $57 million in funding, chose 12 companies to advance spaceport technologies.


BioDefense: LLNL, DOD, NNSA Dedicate Rapid Response Laboratory and Supercomputing System to Accelerate Biodefense

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) recently welcomed officials from the Department of Defense (DOD) and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) to unveil a new supercomputing system and Rapid Response Laboratory (RRL). The new supercomputer will enhance biodefense through large-scale simulations and AI-based modeling. The RRL will support rapid design and testing of medical countermeasures, including vaccines and antibodies, using high-throughput experiments and advanced computing.
