The U.S. Department of Commerce and Samsung have signed a preliminary agreement under the CHIPS and Science Act, allocating $6.4 billion to bolster the U.S. semiconductor supply chain. Samsung plans to invest over $40 billion in Texas in the coming years, creating 20,000 jobs and strengthening national security. Their investment will include the construction of new logic fabs, an R&D fab, and an advanced packaging facility.

The CHIPS for America program has opened approximately $54 million for research projects to bolster the U.S. semiconductor industry's global leadership. Administered by the Department of Commerce, this funding for eligible small businesses aims to enhance semiconductor metrology, critical for manufacturing complex devices.

Critical Materials: DARPA Selects Companies to Create Technology for Increasing Critical Materials Price Transparency

DARPA's OPEN program aims to enhance transparency in critical materials markets for national security and economic stability. It focuses on developing forecasting technology to assess component-based pricing and supply-demand dynamics for materials rare earth metals. Performers will prototype systems to estimate input costs and forecast supply-demand functions.


AI/ML: Air Force Research Laboratory Receives $4M Grant to Build Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Research CenterThe Air Force Research Laboratory's (AFRL) Materials and Manufacturing Directorate has received a $4 million Office of Secretary of Defense (OSD) Centralized Laboratory Investment Program (CLIP) award to construct the AIMR-2C, its first CLIP project. The 6,000-square-foot lab at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base will focus on AI/ML topics and enhance partnerships with academic institutions like the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) and Wright State University.


Drones: Counter-Drone Systems Included in DOD’s Initial Replicator SelectionsWhile details about the program have largely remained classified, it has been reported that the Pentagon's Replicator initiative's first phase included counter-drone assets, unmanned surface vessels, and loitering munitions. Aimed at countering China's military buildup, Replicator plans to deploy thousands of autonomous systems by August 2025 through an estimated $1 billion expenditure. Selections for the program are made in tranches, with mature technologies emphasized initially.
