Critical Tech Outage Globally - What You Need to Know

Today a widespread computer outage affected businesses and services globally. The glitch is due to a software update of CrowdStrike's EDR product that runs with high privileges and protects endpoints. When this update reached computers running Microsoft Windows, it caused system crashes across numerous organizations.

This incident highlights the interconnectedness of our digital infrastructure and the potential for cascading effects from a single failure. The impact was immediate and far-reaching, severely disrupting business processes worldwide.

  • US Federal Aviation Administration shut down operations; about 1,400 out of 110,000 scheduled commercial flights cancelled
  • Major disruptions to rail services in US and UK, including metro systems and commuter networks
  • Hospitals in UK, Germany, Israel, and US reported problems; emergency 911 lines down in parts of US
  • Banks reported issues with phone lines and card payments; some hedge funds unable to process trades
  • TV channels in France and UK experienced technical difficulties, with some temporarily off air
  • Paris 2024 Olympic Games organizers activated contingency plans

Both Microsoft and CrowdStrike have ruled out claims of cyberattack and said that the outage took place due to a "recent update received in the product". The issue affected countless companies and organizations that rely on CrowdStrike and Microsoft for their daily operations.

CrowdStrike quickly identified the issue as a defect in a single content update for Windows hosts, confirming that Mac and Linux hosts were not impacted. The company isolated the problem and deployed a fix, directing customers to their support portal for the latest updates.

Hours after the initial outbreak, Microsoft announced that the "underlying cause for a global outage has been fixed." However, residual impacts continued to affect some Office 365 apps and services.

Recovery is expected to take days, as the problem requires manual resolution, endpoint by endpoint, by starting them in Safe Mode and removing the faulty driver, noted Omer Grossman, CIO at CyberArk, adding the root cause behind the malfunction will be of the "utmost interest."

Role of IAM in Mitigating Outage Impacts

n scenarios like this, robust Identity and Access Management (IAM) systems can play a crucial role. IAM can help maintain operational continuity by ensuring that critical personnel still have access to essential systems and data, even when primary systems fail. It can also facilitate rapid recovery by enabling quick restoration of access once systems are back online.
