Critical shortage of reefer containers

The growing shortfall of refrigerated containers (reefers) is straining the movement of goods across food, pharmaceutical, chemical, and biotechnology sectors, with demand far outpacing supply.

Rising imports from Asia, seasonal export pressures, and ongoing disruptions in global shipping networks have exacerbated the availability of reefers, impacting markets across the Americas, Europe, and Asia.

Seafood imports from Asia have risen by 30%, increasing demand for the specialised equipment, while exports from Argentina and Chile has intensified the shortfall, with exporters reporting a 73% deficit in reefer boxes, which has contributed to shortages at key US ports, including Houston, Philadelphia, and Virginia.

Beyond food, the reefer shortage affects the transportation of many products including chemicals, pharmaceuticals and floriculture all of which require strict temperature control. Europe is currently facing a 19% shortfall in reefer availability, and intra-Asian trade routes are similarly strained as global demand for refrigerated transport grows.

Longer transit times, caused by extended shipping routes to avoid geopolitical risks, have also removed 7% of global capacity. This, combined with seasonal demand peaks and fears of potential port disruptions in the US, has further strained reefer availability.

Seasonal shifts and supply chain disruptions are worsening the reefer crisis. The threat of another strike at US east and Gulf coast ports may have prompted early shipments from importers, straining capacity. At the same time, growing reefer volumes globally, projected to rise at a compound annual growth rate of 2.2% through to 2028, signal long-term challenges for the industry.
