A Mark: The Urgency of Gender-Responsive Climate Action
The rain had been relentless. It washed away the fragile soil that Mariam depended on for her crops, her only means of feeding her children. In her village, nestled in the highlands of Ethiopia, climate change wasn't just a topic for debates; it was a daily reality that ate away at their existence. Women like Mariam felt the brunt of this invisible monster. While the world spoke of rising temperatures and melting glaciers, her reality was hunger, displacement, and an endless struggle against forces beyond her control.
Globally, women and girls are disproportionately affected by climate change. According to the United Nations, 80% of people displaced by climate change are women. This disparity is due to their roles in agriculture, water collection, and household energy use. However, women are also at the forefront of climate action, leading efforts to mitigate and adapt to these impacts.
A Brand: Amazon’s Pioneering Role in Gender-Responsive Climate Action
At COP27, the U.S. Agency for International Development ( USAID ) announced a suite of programs to advance gender-responsive climate action. Among these initiatives is the Climate Gender Equity Fund, a new collaboration with Amazon . This partnership, with initial seed funding of $6 million, aims to increase access to climate finance for women-led climate organizations and businesses promoting gender-equitable climate solutions in the least developed countries.
亚马逊 's commitment extends beyond this collaboration. Through its Climate Pledge Fund, Amazon has allocated $50 million to invest in women-founded and women-led climate tech companies. This initiative is part of Amazon 's broader effort to advance gender equality in the fight against climate change. By supporting innovative solutions developed by women, Amazon is fostering a more inclusive and effective response to global environmental challenges.
