Finding Your Non - Negotiables!

The Critical Importance of Off Time!

One of my non-negotiables is ensuring complete disconnection during my off time and dedicating myself to core values like family and recreational activities.

If my calendar indicates "Kelvin is OOO or Unavailable," it means I am truly unreachable. ??

I’ve learned through experience that relentless hustle is detrimental to overall well-being, and I make no apologies for taking necessary breaks.

When I’m working, I’m fully committed. I am passionate about my work and take it seriously.

However, maintaining mental and physical wellness is equally, if not more, important for achieving balance.

Over time, I’ve come to understand the importance of effective communication, delegation, and having robust systems in place.

This allows me to be fully present with those who matter most when I’m away.

My team comprehends this approach, and it’s vital for external stakeholders to recognize it as well!

Understanding what being OFF truly means is crucial.

Here are three strategies I've adopted to enhance my mental health and perform at my best:

  • Unplug: This transcends merely disconnecting from work emails or turning off notifications. It involves eliminating any mental or physical barriers that impede your ability to fully disconnect and recharge. Set clear boundaries with colleagues or clients about your availability, delegate tasks in advance, and physically remove yourself from work-related environments.
  • Recharge: Simply taking time off isn't sufficient; it’s imperative to actively engage in activities that replenish your mental and emotional energy. This could involve hobbies, spending quality time with loved ones, exercising, or simply resting. Understanding which activities personally recharge you and how much time you need for this process is key to returning to work feeling revitalized and energized.
  • Refresh: Mindfulness about your mental state is essential when determining if you’re ready to return to work. It’s not just about taking a break; it’s about returning with a clear mind and renewed enthusiasm. This requires self-awareness and honesty about whether you’ve truly disconnected from work stressors and are mentally prepared to face new challenges.

By incorporating these steps and regularly scheduling time for Unplug, Recharge, and Refresh (URR), you can ensure that you’re not merely showing up to work, but arriving as your best self—energized, focused, and ready to tackle any challenges.

Prioritizing your mental and physical well-being is crucial for long-term success and happiness in both your personal and professional life.

Remember, you can’t be AWESOME if you’re always on! ??????

This is a great peice Dr. Kelvin McCree, MA, Ph.D. You wrote on the importance of not being “on” all the time. We live in a time that promotes the opposite and it’s important to remember you have to take time to URR as we move through life it can be easy to forget. Thank you for this reminder and an opportunity to introspect.
