Crisis is what make Leaders stand apart
Sreekanth K Arimanithaya
Entrepreneur In Residence and CHRO with Machani Group. This new role offers a unique opportunity to shape a diverse portfolio of businesses within the Group, while nurturing my own entrepreneurial endeavours.
In 2020 I called the pandemic a black swan event; we are in the middle of 2021 and amidst a more devastating second wave – it’s time to implement what we learnt last time, to help our people and organizations cope better in events which can only be described as unprecedented, heart-breaking and challenging. What also stands out is the way people have rallied around to support each other and, this give me hope that we shall overcome this, together.
As Leaders, the expectations from us are unique, and how we handle this is going to set us apart, both as organizations and as people. So, what is the need of the hour?
- Empathy: We all have business targets on our back, our people continue to work and deliver amidst colossal challenges to mental, physical, social and financial wellbeing. But the need of the hour is empathy. We need to be aware of both the individual circumstances and the societal landscape. Work can wait. People matter.
- Support: We are in the position to take decisions that matter. Use this to advocate people centric measures – this could be better insurance, financial assistance and support, access to medical care (including counselling). The private sector needs to do their bit for us to coast along.
- Do not panic: We are as much impacted by this as the others, but the need of the hour is not panic. Leadership needs clear and decisive vision.
- Be transparent: Open the lines of communication and be candid with the good, bad and ugly. You need the team to rally along with you. Ambiguity breeds chaos.
- Take time out: As we juggle the points above remember that all this is possible only if you can deliver your best – this means focus on your wellness, make time for your family and friends.
As to how will the things pan out over the next few days, my guess is as good as yours. The challenges do seem daunting. But, one thing is clear whatever is the solution the emerges, we are in it together. Stay safe.
