Alright, my fellow humans, let’s talk about self-driving cars, my favorite thing to talk about. Not in the manicured, fake, PR-approved way that tech companies love to spin it—"Safer than human drivers! The future of mobility! Trust the algorithm!" NEIN, let’s talk about what actually happens when these robots-on-wheels hit Mission District streets in San Francisco and find themselves in the chaotic, unpredictable jungle of urban traffic.

The incident at Guerrero and 19th that, on paper, is a non-event—no crash, no injuries, no police report. But in reality? A failure that nicely shows why autonomous vehicles (AVs) are still light-years away from earning the public’s trust.
Machine Uncertainty
Imagine this: A self-driving car, making its way down Guerrero, approaches 19th and signals for a left turn. The light is transitioning—probably about to switch from yellow to red—but our AI chauffeur (!!) decides to go for it. It inches into the intersection, making what can only be described as a leisurely turn. Meanwhile, on 19th Street, a human driver is first in line at a red light. Their light turns green. Green means go. The driver taps the gas, only to realize—wait, what the hell is this?—the self-driving car is still mid-turn, hanging out in the intersection like a lost tourist.
Cue the chain reaction: The human driver instinctively slams the brakes. The self-driving car, perhaps realizing its digital brain has miscalculated, does the same. No collision. No news headline!!
Just a weird thingy where everyone involved—human, machine, pedestrian—gets a front-row seat to the problem no one talks about: these cars don’t handle uncertainty well, and they don’t understand human expectations.
Welcome to the Uncanny Valley of Driving
And no, this was not just something out of the blue thingy. This should be alarming!!!!
To me, that means, self-driving cars follow the rules, but they don’t UNDERSTAND the bigger picture.
A human driver, faced with the same left-turn scenario, would intuitively do one of two things:
Speed up to clear the intersection before cross-traffic gets the green.
Recognize that they’re cutting it too close and stop before committing to the turn.
The self-driving car did neither.
THIS IS DANGEROUS!!!!
Parents, never let go of your child's hand.
Dog owners, keep a firm grip on the leash.
Instead, it was unsure, turned too slowly, and ended up blocking a lane of cross-traffic when it should have already been gone.
It's not careless.
It’s not aggressive.
It’s something far worse—it’s awkward.
And awkward is dangerous.
Traffic is not just about rules—it’s about predictability.
Other drivers anticipate certain behaviors based on context, experience, and micro-signals. When a self-driving car moves in a way that defies human expectation, it doesn’t just disrupt the flow of traffic—it creates panic reactions.
And here’s the thingy: these situations don’t get reported.
Near-Misses Don’t Count
Self-driving car companies love to throw stats at us. "Our cars are involved in fewer accidents than human drivers!"
Fantastic!!!
But what about near-misses??
What about these weird, hair-raising incidents where a self-driving car technically doesn’t break any laws, technically doesn’t crash, but still leaves everyone involved thinking:
That shouldn’t have happened.
These don’t make it into safety reports. They don’t get logged as failures. No one tracks how self-driving cars make human drivers panic, change suddenly, or doubt themselves.
But ask around—talk to the pedestrians who witness these incidents, the cyclists who get cut off by a robot that doesn’t seem to "see" them, the drivers who have had these unsettling encounters—and you’ll hear the same thing:
These cars are not as ready as the companies claim.
The Psychological Cost
Now, let’s talk about something data can’t measure—human emotion.

The driver who had to slam the brake last Sunday around lunch time? He will not forget that situation anytime soon. Whether he realized it or not, he just learned a new behavior:
Don’t trust self-driving cars at intersections.
The pedestrians who saw it now have one more reason to be even more cautious at AV crossings.
These small experiences add up, slowly but surely reducing people's confidence in self-driving cars. Over time, these minor issues build up, weakening trust. And once trust is broken, it's very difficult to restore.
This is more than a PR problem. This is an existential threat to the industry.
Because here’s the thingy: If people reject self-driving cars as unsafe or unreliable, cities will resist, and politicians will impose strict rules.
The dream of a fully autonomous future will STOP—not because of technology, but because people don’t fall for it anymore. ??
What Needs to Change Immediately, NOW
This is where the self-driving industry needs to get their act together.
It’s not enough to be “safer than human drivers” in a statistical sense!!
These cars need to be perceived as safer by the actual humans who share the road with them.
Here’s how to start:
Stop Ignoring Near-Misses.
The industry needs to track and report every incident where an AV’s actions caused another driver to react suddenly—even if there was no collision.
Fix the Left-Turn Problem. NOW.
Left turns are an unsolved issue for AVs. They need to be programmed with decisiveness—either commit and clear the intersection or don’t go at all.
Engage with the Public Honestly.
People don’t trust robots that make mistakes and then pretend they didn’t. Acknowledge the awkwardness, explain what’s being done to fix it, and actually listen to community feedback.
Test in Simulated High-Stress Urban Conditions. You've got the tools.
Stop cherry-picking routes and easy scenarios. Run these cars through nightmare traffic simulations—aggressive drivers, confusing signage, unpredictable pedestrian behavior. If they can’t handle that, they’re not ready.
Enough.
Adapt or Be Rejected
Self-driving cars will either earn their place in cities—or they won’t. Right now, they are failing the trust test.
The good news? Trust can be rebuilt.
But not through marketing.
Not with handpicked data!!
Only through real, tangible improvements in how these cars behave in actual human environments.
The industry loves to talk about the "future of mobility."
Here’s a last thingy:
The future doesn’t just happen.
The public has to want it.
And right now?
We’re not convinced. Period.
