Corporate Communications Specialist @ DLM Capital Group | Strategic Communications, Media Management Expert
I recently completed the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) Associate Induction Programme, and it was an incredible learning experience that has reshaped my approach to PR and communication. The journey was filled with insightful lectures, hands-on projects, and valuable discussions with industry leaders, leaving me with new perspectives and tools to excel in my profession.
Learning from PR Experts
The 5-day program kicked off with a series of lectures from seasoned PR professionals, covering topics such as:
These topics were not just presumed, they were filled with real-world strategies that immediately connected to the challenges we face in today's communications landscape. The session on media relations particularly stood out for me, emphasizing how we can craft narratives that resonate with different segments of the media to ensure impactful coverage. I also learned that effective stakeholder management goes beyond crisis control; it’s about building trust over time.
Tackling a PR Case Study: Group Work Experience
One of the most engaging parts of the programme was the group project. We were divided into six groups and tasked with critiquing a real PR case study. As a team of five professionals, we chose the crisis management efforts of the Nigeria Customs Service as our focus. The case revolved around their initiative to stabilize food prices and strengthen the Naira by distributing seized 25kg bags of rice for ?10,000 in Lagos.

While the initiative was ambitious, we drove deep into the communication strategy and identified several gaps. Our critique highlighted how the rollout could have been better structured, with clearer messaging and more effective engagement with the public.
Lessons Learned & Strategy Recommendations
Working through this case study emphasized key PR principles, especially in crisis management. We offered alternative strategies, such as a more targeted public awareness campaign and improved stakeholder involvement, which could have eased the public's concerns and minimized confusion.
Our group also highlighted the importance of transparency and proactive communication during crises. These are essential for building trust and managing expectations, two pillars of effective public relations.
Looking Ahead
Completing the NIPR Associate Programme has been incredibly rewarding. Beyond the technical knowledge, it has given me a greater appreciation for how thoughtful communication can shape public perception, build trust, and mitigate risks. The insights I have gained are already influencing how I approach my role in brand and corporate communications.
I highly recommend this program to other PR professionals seeking to expand their expertise. The combination of expert-led sessions and collaborative projects offers a well-rounded experience that is sure to benefit anyone looking to excel in the world of public relations.
