Today in Kingston, Ontario, a city celebrated for its vibrant university culture and historic charm, municipal leadership has come under fire for its handling of an illegal protest that disrupted the community.
Over 30 protestors, operating without permits, blocked streets, disrupted local businesses, and inconvenienced thousands of residents, shoppers, and tourists. The illegal protest further hindered essential services, including fire trucks, ambulances, public transportation and public traffic putting public safety at significant risk.
Despite these clear violations of Canadian laws and municipal bylaws, Kingston’s municipal leaders and law enforcement failed to take meaningful action and appeared unwilling or unable to act decisively.
Their reluctance to address the antisemitic nature of the protest, which was rife with racist behaviour and blatant antisemitic hate speech targeting Jewish people, their country and the glorification of terrorism alongside its lawlessness, has drawn sharp criticism and raised serious concerns about the city’s commitment to upholding justice and public safety.
Many accuse Kingston’s leadership of failing in their fundamental duty to uphold the rule of law and protect the community. These actions go far beyond the boundaries of free speech, crossing firmly into hate speech—a matter that demands swift and decisive legal action.
The mayor and city council have faced accusations of prioritizing a "woke" agenda over their responsibility to protect the rights and dignity of all citizens. Their inaction in the face of antisemitic hate speech, coupled with their failure to support law enforcement in restoring order, has fueled frustration among residents. This lack of accountability undermines the principles of inclusivity, equality, and respect that Canadian society holds dear.
Hate speech directed at Jewish people, or any other group along with glorification of terrorism, and the disruption of public life represent clear threats to the safety and cohesion of the community.

Such actions must be met with the full force of the law. Allowing this behaviour to go unchecked risks normalizing intolerance and emboldening those who seek to spread hatred.
The glorification of terrorism and the hateful rhetoric present at the protest make this issue even more urgent. This behaviour is not only deeply divisive but also a direct violation of Canadian law.
It demands a response commensurate with its seriousness, involving the full force of the law to hold perpetrators accountable and ensure that such acts are not repeated.
As Kingston looks ahead to its next municipal election, citizens are likely to demand leadership that demonstrates the courage and conviction, to stand against hate and lawlessness, and one that prioritizes public safety, community well-being, and the fair enforcement of laws. Lawful peaceful protest is a cornerstone of democracy, but it must remain within the bounds of legality and mutual respect for all individuals.
The events in Kingston today, Friday, November 29, 2024, are a stark and sobering reminder that courageous and principled leadership is essential to maintaining a just and inclusive society.
Elected officials must take a stand against hate, lawlessness, and threats to public safety by enforcing laws impartially. Only then can Kingston’s leaders rebuild public trust and reaffirm their commitment to the safety, rights and dignity of all citizens.
