What We're Reading

This event presents two pieces of research by World Vision and Plan International respectively, from seven countries with a focus on urban fragility and resilience within the triple nexus (humanitarian, development, and peacebuilding) from the perspectives and experiences of children and youth.?The countries are Uganda, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Kenya, the Philippines, Honduras, and Lebanon. The wide geographical reach enables reflection on what urban fragility and resilience mean in diverse urban contexts and allows us to provide examples of community-led solutions by co-organizers Dreamtown and Slum Dwellers International.?Inter-Generational Dialogue On Urban Fragility And Resilience – Evidence From The City?

Each year the country presiding over the UN Climate Summit - which this year is Egypt - can choose key areas in which to raise ambition through the ‘presidency programme’.?The news that Egypt has chosen to add an ‘adaptation and agriculture day’ at COP27 is very welcome and shows how agriculture is rising to the top of the climate agenda. But it is imperative that this delivers tangible progress towards a more sustainable global food system.?We Need a Clearer Roadmap to a Resilient Food System?

Researchers at Oregon State University have developed a computational model for predicting the resilience of local and regional infrastructure networks?and the recovery time for impacted communities following a massive earthquake and tsunami in the Cascadia Subduction Zone.?Researchers Develop Framework For Modeling Post-earthquake Infrastructure Resilience

It has been one year since the collapse of Afghanistan, and while the world has moved on to other issues, it’s important to remember the key lessons of that conflict—if for no other reason than to avoid repeating the same mistakes in the future.?As assistant secretary general for operations at NATO, I was responsible for writing the Alliance’s lessons on Afghanistan in late 2021. While the full document remains classified, the key lessons themselves are not. In fact, they’re obvious to any student of national security, conflict, or international affairs.?I wrote NATO’s lessons from Afghanistan. Now I wonder: What have we learned??

Power outages caused by natural disasters have affected millions of customers and cost billions of dollars. The Department of Energy plays a key role in disaster response and long-term electricity grid recovery.?DOE has taken some steps to improve its workforce and training, tools and technology, and local capacity to respond to disasters. But, DOE doesn't have a comprehensive plan for coordinating response and recovery responsibilities within the agency. In addition, DOE hasn't used lessons learned from previous disasters to prioritize recovery efforts.?Electricity Grid: DOE Should Address Lessons Learned from Previous Disasters to Enhance Resilience?

The podcast is very rich and thought provoking. One small thing - in the editing there appears to be use of software that removes gaps in natural speech, making it slightly distracting when listening.
