I used several inspirational documentaries in my leadership courses. Here is one that entered the rotation in the last couple of years. The Netflix film Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution provides a powerful look into the lives of disabled teenagers in the 1970s. Among the many inspiring figures in the film, Judith Heumann stands out as a transformational leader whose advocacy work has had a lasting impact.
Here are a few observations.
She was Resilient—As with any leader, Heumann’s journey was fraught with obstacles, from societal discrimination to bureaucratic hurdles. Her resilience and persistence in the face of these challenges are inspiring. Leaders must be prepared to confront and overcome the current “system,” which will require grit. Heumann’s story teaches us that enduring change often requires steadfast determination and the courage to persist.
She Built a Coalition—One of the most amazing aspects of Heumann’s leadership was her ability to build and mobilize a movement. She understood the power of collective action and united individuals with disabilities, allies, and supporters to create a powerful coalition. She recognized the importance of collaboration and community-building.
She was Authentic—Her leadership style is marked by authenticity and a deep personal connection to the cause. Her commitment and lived experience lent credibility and passion to her advocacy. Leaders who tap into their authentic selves and connect personally with their mission can inspire greater trust and loyalty.
The film Crip Camp offers invaluable lessons for all leaders. By embodying the above, she facilitated meaningful change and improved our nation. Watch this powerful documentary, I promise you will be inspired. In my humble opinion, more people need to know the name Judith Heumann.
I have had the honor of interviewing a few leaders who have advocated for others in profound ways, and they are quite inspiring. Have a listen – you will be glad you know their stories.
