Cricket and Marcel (2 of my passions)

Cricket and Marcel (2 of my passions)

While the latest victory by Indian Cricket Team for WorldT20 was a long time in the making, and worth every bit of the wait for the Indians around the world. To me (in my penchant for lessons from everything, from every moment around us in life), this world cup campaign and the victory tells us:

  1. Cricket: Hard work beats Talent, we may not have the star studded team always but see what they did with their hard work; Marcel: We may not have the most talented people, myself included on Marcel(I don’t even care about talent that much), but what we have is the most hard working people
  2. Cricket: Persistence, Consistency and Discipline are needed every single day if you want to achieve something great and in something that you believe in; Marcel: My team putting in efforts every single day consistently towards achieving our goals and vision with the belief towards helping grow 100K people and business.
  3. Cricket: There will be highs and lows towards your vision in your journey - use them in the right way to boost yourself (with wins) and lessons (from the losses); Marcel: Some of our offerings work and some don't but we keep evolving Marcel's value by learning from those, despite our share of flak/cynicism we get from time to time, but we don't stop. "We don't have haters, we have fans in denial for Marcel"
  4. Cricket: Nothing great is achieved by single person, it’s the TEAM - This campaign from Indian Cricket Team was a great example where everyone played the part, and on different occasions, different people stood up. No dependency on one person only ever; Marcel: We see this on Marcel every single day with our cross functional and cross geo team helping raise everyone around them as well as Marcel and correspondingly our 100K people in the company and the business
  5. Cricket: Stay calm and believe in yourself (especially if you know you have done the hard work preparing) - the last 5 overs was more of a mental game than skill game to which India came out on the right side; Marcel: We have our moments of pressure and team always is there handling it with grace, and most importantly doing it with a smile on their faces all the time (go ask our stakeholders)
  6. Cricket: Pay tribute and thank the people behind the scenes - Coaching and support staff - Rahul Dravid (The great wall of India) was there like the Coach this team needed the most; Marcel: We are thankful to leaders across the Publicis Groupe, as well as our users who are our everyday coaches who tell us (directly or indirectly) which makes us make Marcel better every single day – to our users – you rock and you make us better everyday
  7. Cricket: new players emerged and grew (Arshdeep, Axar etc); Marcel: We have seen the people grow here on Marcel team over the years (Several growth stories on the team and we are not done yet). Keep Growing!
  8. Cricket: Family matters and is perhaps the most important part. You can see all these celebrity type cricketers reaching out and sharing the moment with their families first; Marcel: Our team is made up of simple human beings who are not celebrities but focus on their overall wellbeing, families included. You can't grow if you are not well is the mantra we apply on building Marcel and bonus we have offerings on Marcel which help with some of those

Nice one, Arpit. Being an ardent cricket fan myself too, can relate to a lot of those virtues the Indian team displayed during the tournament. I'd just add a few more lessons.. Killing Demons & Negative Experiences: The team had lost the last 5 ICC championship finals across formats, but they didn't let it affect the belief or psyche even in the tightest of moments. Adaptability: The tournament was played across multiple countries with vastly varying conditions and the team found a way to adapt to all those and came up trumps. True to Emotions: At the end of the hard struggle, we found the tough as nuts men letting their emotions free and weeping like innocent kids. I believe it is important to stay true to your emotions and let it go sometimes.
