Cricket: India’s secret religion

Cricket is more than just a sport in India. It is a religion that unites people across the country, transcending barriers of class, caste, and creed. For millions of Indians, cricket is a symbol of hope and a source of inspiration. The sport has produced some of India's most iconic figures, including Sachin Tendulkar, Kapil Dev, and Virat Kohli, who have become role models for young people across the country.

With a lot of matches happening in India such as Ind vs Sri Lanka ODI and T20 series, Ind vs New Zealand ODI & T20 series, and the recent India vs Australia Tests and ODIs, there has been tremendous cricketing action which has been going on since the start of the year.?

It seems like T20s are the new kid on the cricket block, and everyone's flocking to them like they're giving out free samosas. But let's not forget the classic Tests and ODIs, they're like the khichdi and dal of cricket, timeless and always satisfying. Sure, T20s are like a quick shot of espresso, exciting and intense, but let's not overlook the pleasure of sipping a warm cup of tea while watching a day-long test match. Plus, who wants to eat just appetizers when you can have a full-course meal? A lot of chatter going on around if ODI’s and Tests are dying in terms of popularity. But is that actually the case? Sherlock AI puts its thinking cap on.

Bilateral Series: 2023

India has had a packed cricketing calendar and has played against Sri Lanka, New Zealand, Australia across T20s, ODIs and Tests in the first 3 months of 2023

Looking at the popularity of the three series, it’s evident that New Zealand and Australia matches have been the most popular compared to the Sri Lankan matches. The peaks of the popularity also correspond to the exact date of the match (obviously!)

Though there is a lot of chatter around Tests and ODIs losing relevance and popularity among the audience, there is almost no difference when it comes to the difference of popularity between ODIs and T20s. T20s only marginally are more popular than ODIs!

Very interestingly, the Ind vs Aus tests (Border Gavaskar Trophy of 2023) was among the most popular bilateral series across all formats of the game!!

How were the average popularity calculated?

Total digital chatter on all social platforms and search trends were taken into consideration and converted into normalized scores out of 100.

For T20s, the same day’s digital footprint is taken into consideration, whereas for ODIs, two consecutive day’s (match day and consecutive day) average is taken. Whereas for Tests, the 4 day average is taken for calculation purposes. Very interestingly the last Border Gavaskar Trophy test had the highest average (though across 4 days!) than even T20s and ODIs!

Who said Tests are dying??

I can’t wait to show them these proprietary data points generated by Sherlock AI which can’t prove them more wrong!
