Meet Charlotte Wingent, Senior Account Executive - Crew Recruitment
Charlotte Wingent is a Senior Account Executive at Faststream Recruitment, with expertise in crew recruitment and a focus on the offshore, tanker, and cruise sectors. Her insights into the evolving demands of the crewing sector emphasise the industry’s increasing focus on technical expertise, digital literacy, and sustainability. In her role, Charlotte aligns these trends to match skilled professionals with positions that require specific knowledge and a commitment to continuous professional development.
Who are the most sought-after professionals in crewing for the offshore, tanker, and cruise sectors?
“There is a significant effort to enhance gender diversity and attract more women to the maritime industry, including onboard roles in tankers. Companies are implementing policies and creating supportive environments to encourage gender diversity among their crews. Engineers continue to be in high demand across various sectors and geographic regions.”
Looking ahead, how do you see the crewing sector evolving over the next 5-10 years? What should crew members do now to future-proof their careers?
"The future crewing sector will require higher levels of technical expertise, particularly in managing and maintaining advanced automated systems. Digital literacy will become essential for most crew positions, with ongoing training in emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI).
With the global push towards decarbonisation and stricter environmental regulations, the crewing sector will need to focus heavily on sustainability. Crew members will need to be well-versed in green technologies, alternative fuels, and energy efficiency measures, as these will become integral to tanker operations.
It’s an ever-evolving landscape with new technologies, new fuels, new tasks to be completed at sea, and growth sectors such as offshore wind. To maximise their potential, it is important that crew members stay up-to-date with these trends and continually update their skills and qualifications to align with industry advancements."
What are some of the current trends you're seeing in the recruitment of crude oil tankers, LNGs, LPGs, and other specialised vessels?
"Increased specialisation and technical expertise are becoming crucial in the maritime industry. Roles such as Gas Engineers on LNG carriers or Chief Officers on tankers now require not just general maritime knowledge but also deep technical expertise in cargo handling, pressure and temperature management, and gas containment systems. This trend is resulting in a higher demand for specialised engineers, officers, and technicians.
Modern specialised vessels are equipped with advanced automated systems for cargo handling, navigation, and safety management, increasing the need for previous experience with automation systems.
The industry is increasingly recruiting from a global talent pool to meet the unique demands of these vessels. This trend is driving more diverse crews, requiring cultural competency and communication skills to manage multicultural teams effectively.
As the industry explores alternative fuels like LNG and ammonia, there is a growing need for crew members who are knowledgeable about these fuels and their handling. This is leading to a demand for roles that focus on fuel management, including new positions related to energy transition initiatives.
These trends are reshaping the types of roles and qualifications in demand for the recruitment of onboard crew for crude oil tankers, LNGs, LPGs, and other specialised vessels. The industry is moving towards a more technologically advanced, safety-conscious, and environmentally responsible approach, with a strong emphasis on specialised training and continuous professional development."
