Electronic Seafarer Certificates: A New Era of Digitalisation in the Maritime Industry

Electronic Seafarer Certificates: A New Era of Digitalisation in the Maritime Industry

Last month, the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) officially approved the issuance of seafarer certificates in electronic formats. This significant shift is a direct response to the growing digitalisation trends within the maritime industry.

Traditional paper-based certificates have faced issues such as misplacement, delays in issuance, and challenges with verification.

To ensure the security and authenticity of digital certificates, maritime administrations must adhere to minimum data requirements, including qualifications, endorsements, and medical certifications. They are also required to establish secure systems for verifying the certificates' validity.

Yachts and vessels operating under the STCW framework can now implement electronic certificates where appropriate.

Flag state administrations will manage the transition, with guidelines set to ensure a seamless implementation process.

2) Offshore Vessels

  • Typically follow balanced rotations, ensuring regular time off.
  • Common in sectors like oil & gas and renewable energy support.
