1. CresCine Uncovers Industry Insights at Berlinale EFM 2024

CresCine's Members at the European Film Market Session during Berlinale

CresCine has left its print at the European Film Market during Berlinale, presenting an exclusive peek into the pulse of audience preferences and industry dynamics.

Consortium members Manuel José Damásio (Lusófona University Lisbon), Ulrike Rohn (Baltic Film, Media and Arts School - BFM, Tallinn University), Ivana Kostovska (SMIT-VUB, Belgium), Jakob Isak Nielsen and Cathrin Bengesser (Aarhus University, Denmark) and Fatih Abay (Diversity & Inclusion Officer at the European Film Academy, Germany) showcased outlooks on skill gaps, market opportunities and greening in a session moderated by Sten-Kristian Saluveer (Storytek).

Results from Cathrin Bengesser demonstrated that audiences in small markets are resilient; they'll watch domestic films despite challenges like limited budgets and genre variety, given the right conditions: marketing buzz, relatable content, and social validation.

Researcher Ivana Kostovska highlighted export potential: better strategies can tap into overlooked opportunities. Europe remains a prime export destination, but Croatia, Estonia, Lithuania, and Portugal hold untapped potential in Asian, Oceanian, and US markets. ????

Ivana Kostovska's (SMIT-VUB) Data on Export Markets for the Small Market Productions

?? Here's a snapshot of more Key Findings from the event:

?? Genre Trends: Drama and Comedy take center stage, with Comedy proving to be a domestic powerhouse.

?? Animation Powerhouse: Animated Films are global favorites, defying expectations and captivating audiences worldwide with their universal appeal.

?? SVOD Spotlight: While global SVOD circulation may lag, Amazon emerges as the heavyweight champion in EU+UK catalogs.

?? Value of Partnerships: Collaborating with European partners significantly boosts non-national admissions, particularly for German, Italian, Polish, Danish, Estonian, Croatian, and Lithuanian films. ????

?? Netflix’s Blind Spots: Danish films commissioned by Netflix reign supreme in CresCine markets, but the global streamer overlooks Croatia, Estonia, and Lithuania. Polish films outshine French and German counterparts, while Italian productions lag behind. ???

?? Skill Study Takeaways: The industry grapples with a pronounced skills gap, with 80% of all respondents unable to join training and only 20% feeling secure about their position in the industry or financial capacity.

?? Upskilling Opportunities: Diversified training programs are essential to equip professionals with the multifaceted skills demanded by an ever-evolving industry landscape.

CresCine's roadmap for the year ahead promises deeper insights, innovative initiatives such as the Producers Club and a steadfast commitment to addressing emerging trends and audience needs!
