Credit Monitoring Or Identity Restoration
Dan Westervelt, JD.
No doubt you have heard about The Equifax data breach. It is a chilling reminder that you need identity theft protection more than ever. Every year over 10 million Americans have their identity stolen. Here is what you need to know about the Equifax breach. First, consider that credit theft is only 15% of the actual threat. The information ID thieves really want doesn't even involve your credit accounts.
Equifax Breach Quick Facts: Equifax is one of the 3 major credit bureaus, and as such, has access to some of the most sensitive information about you and exactly what information of yours is not currently known.
· Number of people affected: 143 million (now 145.5) Americans, which is over 44% of the US population.
· Types of data compromised: Social Security numbers, Driver’s License Numbers, date of birth, credit card, banking and other (401 K/ retirement accounts) information. These are what ID thieves really do need to steal your ID.
What does this mean? The simple truth is that we will not even know the full extent of the damages for years to come. Once your data is compromised though, only a real expert can repair the damage.
145.5 million people and their families are now directly at risk of having their stolen data used. It could take up to 18 months or more to resolve, and you may need to take time off from work to deal with this issue. This is the "pearl harbor of identity theft” one expert said. “If you don’t take precautions now, you will surely be one of the people victimized over and over again for the foreseeable future. I mean for years to come."
What can you do? Secure the ID's of you and your family with ID Shield. It is a comprehensive identity theft plan that provides real-time access to licensed private investigators, credit and ID monitoring and most importantly complete expert ID repair, once a breach is detected.
The solution Equifax is offering is their own credit monitoring product. Do you really want Equifax in charge of your identity? Will you really continue to pay them after this first free year of credit security? Remember that data has a very long shelf life. Mark Zuckerberg’s password was compromised and used more than 4 years after the LinkedIn breach.
In a recent CNBC interview on this data breach, Morgan Wright, a State Department Senior Anti-Terrorism Advisor revealed he uses ID Shield to protect his own identity, "Because they are the only service with licensed private investigators working the case from start to finish, period".
As your ID Shield provider. I rarely email my community sounding such a dramatic alarm. But this is just too critically important not to speak up.
