Credit card debt in America soars to record $1 trillion

CNN’s PM Plug-In is a weekday newsletter to catch you up on important news you may have missed during your busy day. Make sure to subscribe to stay in the know.

Today we’re looking at new data by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York that finds Americans’ credit card debt has surpassed $1 trillion for the first time.

WHAT’S HAPPENING:?

  • Credit card balances shot up by $45 billion during the second quarter – about 4.6% – to hit $1.03 trillion, New York Fed’s latest Quarterly Report on Household Debt and Credit shows.
  • Add auto loan balances to the mix and household debt levels are up 1%, to $17.06 trillion. Overall household debt has spiked by $2.9 trillion since the end of 2019. In financial speak, the New York Fed’s debt balances are nominal and not adjusted for inflation.

HOW INTEREST RATES FACTOR IN:

  • Debt increases come as interest rates have quickly vaulted to a 22-year high. The average credit card now charges a near-record 20.53% interest rate, according to Bankrate.
  • “With elevated interest rates, paying that debt becomes more expensive, and with consumers continuing to take on more debt, this combination will put more pressure on some households who have those tighter budgets,” economist Sofia Baig tells CNN.
  • “Unfortunately, it’s only going to go up from here,” warns Matt Schulz, chief credit analyst for LendingTree. “What’s driving it is inflation, higher interest rates and just generally how expensive life is in 2023.”

BIG PICTURE OF HOUSEHOLD FINANCES:

  • Higher rates of borrowers became delinquent on their credit card, auto and mortgage payments for the quarter, according to the Fed data. Mortgage delinquency is below pre-pandemic rates, but auto and credit card delinquency averages are the highest since 2018 and 2012, respectively.
  • Despite those increases, delinquencies have not yet risen to a point where consumers are experiencing widespread financial distress, New York Fed researchers say.
  • But some cracks may be forming. On Tuesday, we told you about a report that more people are tapping into their 401(k) accounts because of financial distress. While there’s plenty of data showing many Americans are doing well, “there’s also only so much hard debt that people can handle before delinquencies really spike,” Schulz says.
  • The New York Fed itself cautions that “rising balances may present challenges for some borrowers, and the resumption of student loan payments this fall may add” financial strain. When debt piles up, it’ll inevitably force people to rein in their spending – “a change in behavior in order to survive,” Baig says. Some consumers have already pulled back or dipped into savings.

Here are some other stories we're following today:

It looks like somebody won the $1.58 billion Mega Millions jackpot Tuesday night. A winning ticket was sold at a Publix in Neptune Beach near Jacksonville, Florida, the state's lottery says. If confirmed, the jackpot resets, so you're looking at a paltry $20 million if you win the next drawing Friday.

Police in Montgomery, Alabama, say more people could be charged in the riverside brawl that has gone viral on social media. The chief is asking those involved to come forward to be interviewed, notably a man seen wielding a folding chair. Police say the fight broke out after three White men attacked a Black riverboat co-captain who had confronted them about parking their pontoon boat in the wrong spot. The fight spiraled from there, as others came to the co-captain's aid. The three men face assault charges. One witness says a racial slur was used, according to a court document.

Wildfires fueled by a distant hurricane's winds are devastating the Hawaiian island of Maui. Some people lost power and 911 service, and hospitals are overwhelmed with burn patients and those who breathed in smoke. A wall of flames consumed businesses on a major tourist strip in Lahaina – and a dozen people in the historic town jumped into the ocean to escape the flames and smoke before they were rescued by the Coast Guard. Fires also are burning elsewhere in Hawaii, including the Big Island. Follow live updates on the fast-moving story.

Police in a small Australian town are trying to figure out how poisonous mushrooms may have ended up in the meal a woman served her former in-laws. The woman was hosting the 70-year-old couple and her former mother-in-law’s sister and husband. Both in-laws and the sister died after the meal, and the fourth guest is critically ill in the hospital. Police say they’re investigating the woman because she’s the only adult at the meal who didn’t get sick – but they say the tragic deaths “could be very innocent.” The woman tearfully denied wrongdoing when speaking to reporters, but she declined to answer questions about what she cooked. ESPN is branching into the booming world of online gambling. The sports network inked a 10-year, $2 billion deal with casino owner PENN Entertainment to create “ESPN Bet,” a sportsbook that will come online this fall. ESPN talent will promote the betting service, which will be “deeply integrated” across ESPN content, the CEO of PENN says. Addiction experts have raised red flags about the lucrative explosion in online gambling. The vast majority of US states have legalized sports betting since the Supreme Court cleared the way for it five years ago.
