?? Creators want ethical AI and Meta wants Gen Z

Issue #326

I’ve shied away from everything AI in this newsletter for a while now. It’s amazing how quickly such a life-altering tool became almost passé when it comes to the latest developments in the creator economy. But AI is creeping into our workflows in more meaningful ways, as the report below suggests. I like when it provides novel utility that I hadn’t expected. The new Notebook LM by Google is an example that looks like a really useful tool for creators producing long-form, detailed written and audio content. Happy Thursday, Simon.

How are creators using AI?

A new report asked how creators have embraced AI. Unsurprisingly, 92% of respondents said they were using generative AI in some form but 90% said they felt they weren’t getting the most out of the technology. A massive 96% claim they’re using AI to boost their creativity, either by streamlining creation, automating production and improving quality. Reassuringly, the report highlighted creators' concerns about ethical use of AI, with 74% wanting guidelines for responsible use.

Tailoring AI to the individual

While creators are after ethical guidelines, it appears to be anything goes for platforms. Meta recently announced it was going to use AI to generate unique content for individuals . Reportedly, the images will be created based on a user’s interests and likeness. Not creepy at all right? Ideally, users will engage with the content, reimagining what AI thinks they’ll like. Expect to see posts from your friends completely disappear, unless the robots are your friends.

Meta is after Gen Z

The AI updates are just part of Meta’s bigger strategy. It also announced revamps to Groups, Marketplace and Messenger as well as a shift in focus to local communities. It’s hoped the redesign of these products will attract the holy grail of users - Gen Z. A new Local tab will appear across Marketplace, Groups and Events with local activities will be more prominent in the Feed. Additionally, an Explore tab will focus on algorithm recommendations and will look pretty similar to Pinterest. Will Gen Z take the bait?

Cool Tools

This icon library is a bit of a find. Think pixelated, animated, retro goodness. It's not for everyone, but if you appreciate that old-school aesthetic, you might find some hidden treasures here.

Hot Tips

That rounded pixel look is having a moment. It's surprisingly easy to pull off too. Just bump up the pixel dimensions in this image editor , soften things out with a blur or distortion filter, then add your content. A little experimentation goes a long way.

Viral Hits

This "manifinsta" trend begs the question: is it genuine self-improvement or just another form of social media delusion? While there's something to be said for visualising your goals, I'm not convinced that posting pictures of Lamborghinis is going to magically put one in your garage. But at least your feed will look impressive while you're waiting for the universe to deliver. In the meantime, I'll stick to my old-fashioned vision board (and maybe a lottery ticket).

Stuff from us

We teamed up with Visa to crack the code on Gen Z's payment patterns , and Instagram carousels held the key. Turns out their purchases are all about living their best life, investing in their dreams, and treating themselves to some well-earned downtime.

Happy Thursday

It is interesting, in the creative writing circles I am in, people are really anti AI in any capacity.
