The creator of Mario - NINTENDO

GenZ’s & Millennials do not know Nintendo like the 80’s & 90’s kids and they probably never will. We have NINTENDO to thank for an era of epic gaming and revolutionary entertainment.

Nintendo was founded in the year 1889 by Japanese entrepreneur Fusajiro Yamauchi, a playing card manufacturer, and marketer. Who knew a manufacturer of playing cards would lead the way to one of the world’s very first & most successful video games!

We have all played Mario at least once in our lives!

What if we were to tell you our beloved?Mario wasn't even the game plan!

Initially, Nintendo wasn't involved in gaming. The very first time the company tried its luck with video games was in the year 1974 when they acquired the rights to Magnavox Odyssey. This was among the first home video game consoles made.

A year later, the company also ventured into arcade gaming with the EVR race. Released in the year 1975, the EVR race was a betting simulator and also one of Nintendo's earliest video games

Video game success dawned on Nintendo with Game & Watch.

These were handheld electronic video games that they produced from the 1980s to 1991. As per Wikipedia, the series sold a combined 43.4 million units worldwide. This was the time when Nintendo unintentionally created a community of gamers.

Game & Watch accounted for one of the major Nintendo successes worldwide. The company was also awarded a Technology & Engineering Emmy Award for the same. This product was a worldwide hit due to the mutual interests of gamers.

Meanwhile, they had also been exploring some other arcade game options. In the 1980s, Nintendo came up with donkey kong, an electronic game that spawned the popular franchise and revolutionized the industry for good. If You’re a Mario person this might come as a shock to you but initially, your loved character was called the JUMPMAN.

The first iteration of the ape tossing barrels at a little mustachioed JUMPMAN became iconic. It was in 1985 when Nintendo released the NES ( Nintendo Entertainment Station) with Super Mario Bros. This console has sold more than 60 million copies and Super Mario Bros became the second most sold game in the world behind WII Sport, another one of Nintendo’s games.

An absolute hit, Super Mario Bros was loved a lot and it also made Mario the most popular Nintendo Character. It may come as a surprise to you but before Super Mario Bros, Mario had already appeared in as many as 14 different games!

"Nintendo's philosophy is never to go the easy path; it's always to challenge ourselves and try to do something new."

  • Shigeru Miyamoto.

(Creator of Donkey Kong, Super Mario, Legends of Zelda & many more)

For the non-digital generation, Nintendo brought in revolutionary entertainment! The concepts and games were embraced more than expected. So now we know the roots of the current gaming community lie deeper all thanks to Nintendo.
