Citizen journalists on the rise
One of the more interesting aspects of the creator economy is the emergence of creator, or citizen, journalism. It’s more than just changing the messenger too, it’s about making news more interactive and immediate. Citizen journos cover everything from local niche happenings to global stories like the wars in Gaza and Ukraine with a TikTok first strategy. We spoke to a few news creators providing an alternative to the mainstream news.?
How will mainstream news fair in 2024?
A survey by Reuters of news digital leaders has found that just under half (47%) have a positive outlook when it comes to journalism in 2024. While citizen journalism embraces social media, traditional news is taking a hit when it comes to social referrals. 63% of respondents were worried by the decline in social traffic with a 48% drop from Facebook and 27% from X/Twitter. To overcome this, publishers will invest more in direct channels and subscriptions, despite the fact younger audiences are used to algorithmically selected news.
LinkedIn pushing news
While other social platforms like Meta are abandoning news content, LinkedIn is going in the opposite direction. It’s actually seen an increase in traffic referrals to news publishers and is looking to invest further into news. LinkedIn already works with 400 approved news networks and there’s an in-house team to optimise content across the site. Journalists are making the most of LinkedIn’s newsletter service with a 150% rise in publishing.?
