LinkedIn doesn't monetize creators, but the rest of the internet is.

During the pandemic influencer marketing suddenly morphed into the Creator Economy. This is because algorithms are trained on sentiment amplification and nobody can do that so well as the people and personal brands we like to follow online. Don’t even get me started on how advanced China is compared to us in live streaming for E-commerce sales.
What are NFTs but creator economy creations, at the end of the day? What is the creator economy? It’s defined as the class of businesses built by over 50 million independent content creators, curators, and community builders including social media influencers, bloggers, and videographers, plus the software and finance tools designed to help them with growth and monetization.
Whether you are on YouTube, Substack, Twitch, Snap, TikTok or another channel you are a creator if you are creating content and have substantial eyeballs on your channels of preference.
Instagram has taken about 11 years to reach around 2 Billion monthly active users. We don’t live in a Metaverse yet, just an in-app attention economy. As older apps become less relevant, newer experiences are defining how pioneers in the Creator Economy reach their audiences.
In early 2022, Instagram is giving creators more ways to make money with today’s launch of Instagram Subscriptions. The feature, which was spotted hitting the App Store back in November, is now officially in early testing with a small group of U.S. creators who will be able to offer their followers paid access to exclusive Instagram Live videos and Stories. It seems even Meta can learn a thing or two from Substack and other platforms that are part of the subscription and paywalled internet of information and entertainment.
While TikTok is a more vibrant global community, Instagram still has a lot of (bloodshot) eyeballs, eye candy and established influencers playing the field of Meta algorithms.
Subscribers will also receive a special badge that will help them to stand out in the comments section and creators’ inboxes.
At launch, only 10 total U.S. creators have gained access to the new feature, as Instagram considers this an “alpha” test meant to allow for feedback from fans and creators alike, which it will then iterate upon.
Facebook Rolling out Pilots for Bulletin and Instagram Subs
In addition to Facebook’s Substack competitor called Bulletin, there’s a lot of pilots at Meta. Currently, the list of alpha creators includes actor and influencer @alanchikinchow; basketball player @sedona._; astrologer @alizakelly; dancer/actress/model @kelseylynncook; digital creator @elliottnorris; Olympic silver medalist @jordanchiles; gymnast and creator @jackjerry; spiritual coach and artist @bunnymichael; XR creator @donalleniii; and digital creator @lonnieiiv.
Meta is getting very desperate to remain relevant in the Creator Economy, even as LinkedIn creates mores Newsletters from people we will never want to read (where they are not even able to monetize). Real creators do video however in the app attention economy. Writers? Not so much.
How Much will Creators Charge on Instagram?
Through the Subscriptions product, creators can choose their own price point for access to their exclusive content.
There are eight price points to choose from, starting at $0.99 per to month to as much as $99.99 per month, depending on how much a creator believes their content is worth. Most creators will likely start toward the bottom of that range, at price points like $0.99, $1.99, $2.99, $4.99 or maybe even $9.99 per month, before experimenting with higher pricing like $19.99, $49.99 or $99.99 per month.

Fans really get attached to their preferred creators online. Brand loyalty is higher when we get involved in the stories of real people and if they mirror our own interests, demographics and are congruent with our own preferences.
The Era of Exclusive Access Paywalls
The program will let creators select from eight different price points, starting at 99 cents/month and ranging up to $99.99/month. That’s a pretty shocking range for a sub.
So what will you be paying for exactly? Facebook wants to be the new Patreon.
It certainly sounds like cloning of Patreon to be honest. Facebook of course wants a cut of the hard work of creators to amass audiences and game algorithms.
As of December 2021, Facebook Subscriptions creators can download emails of new subscribers (who have agreed to share their email addresses) so they can maintain a relationship off-platform. This is a useful benefit to working with Meta. Medium for example allows you to import an Email list in a CSV file, but not export it. That’s very bad for Creators.
With video, audio flourishing, it feels as if writers outside of Substack are being left behind in the Creator Economy. It’s very difficult to grow a Substack list if you do not have an established Newsletter already (like Substack staff have reminded me).
Instagram needs to compete with TikTok, Snap and other newer apps if it wants to maintain its dominant share of the attention economy among GenZ and in the 2020s moving forwards.
Monetization Improves in the Paywalled Internet Creator Economy
Using platforms like YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitch, TikTok, Substack, Patreon, and OnlyFans, content creators can earn money through:
Meanwhile Meta has done a great job promoting its apps to reach the 2 Billion MAU threshold with WhatsApp beating out Instagram by a few months to reach the milestone.
Biggest trending job for young people? They want to participate in the Creator Economy. Generation Z and millennials make up most of the content creator demographic. That’s people born between 1981 and 2012. Many are drawn to the flexible working hours, creative control and being their own boss.
Everything from NFTs to the Metaverse and the evolution of gaming is essentially good for new kinds of jobs in the Creator Economy. In this Newsletter we’ll be cover many of those trends and providing actionable tips to creators of all kinds.

2 年Good article Michael. Creator economy has matured in the last few years. It has given wonderful opportunities for SMEs to aggregate and create content for the masses. But to find good relevant content in a mountain of articles published daily can be a nightmare. However, some content creators seem to have found their niche and have good readership, but rest if mostly trash.
