When presenting complex data I often think about 'how would I explain this to a 13 year old who knows nothing about this subject?'. If I can build a report or present data in a way which is coherent to someone who knows nothing about the subject and is also clear then it will work for a wide audience. It sounds obvious but less is more. The challenge is that distilling complex information is difficult, so think about anagolous proxies in the real world which everyone understands to communicate what something means or is demonstrating.

One thing I've found helpful in doing this well is to present back a series of questions with single sentence answers. For example, What's the problem we are solving? What is our solution? Is it working? Why should we care? This method gets to the key takeaways and avoids unnecessary detail!
