The Creativity Crisis and How ChatGPT Can Help or Hurt New Ideas

My social media feeds typically showcase the motivational quote du jour. One person posts it, someone copies it, and it spirals from there. Like it, love it, share it. This week, the masses seem fond of "Go where you are celebrated, not tolerated."
So, I asked WriteSonic’s AI (A platform that claims to be better than ChatGPT) the origin of the quote. Here is its response:
The quote "Go where you are celebrated, not tolerated" is often attributed to motivational speaker and author, Dr. Vukosi Marivate. However, the origin of this quote is uncertain, and it has been attributed to several other people as well. Regardless of who originally said it, the quote encourages individuals to seek out environments where they are appreciated and valued, rather than settling for situations where they are merely tolerated.
Regardless of the origin, I can get behind the message. When I deliver my signature keynote, How to be More Interesting Than a Cell Phone?, I instruct my audiences to "find their field of bumblebees" – like the little girl in the Blind Melon music video "No Rain."
Out of curiosity, I asked WriteSonic’s AI if it could generate a new quote with a similar meaning that also rhymed. It produced 25 quotes in a hot minute. Impressive, scary, and (you fill in the blank).
Here are the results:
1.????Seek out where you're cheered and revered, not where you're endured or merely adhered.

What do you think? Do you see a new favorite quote to post on your socials?
"Find where you are supported and admired, not where you're dismissed and fired." That would strike a chord during all these layoffs.
This list contains a ton of content. I could drop one of these quotes on a colorful square every day, Monday-Friday, for five weeks! But I would feel like a fraud because I did not create them. We felt betrayed when we found out Milli Vanilli was lip-syncing. How angry will you be when you discover your favorite new thought leader was regurgitating robot writings? We want our thought leaders - to think.
Will the robots be our motivational speakers in the future?
So, who owns this content? From a copyright standpoint, it gets tricky. These new quotes above are technically considered original works because they are not plagiarized; however, they are only copyright protected with substantial human input and adjustments. Who measures that, and how is it proven? Bylines will mean nothing. Authors and creators, beware. Suddenly, art and books will belong to everyone. The law will need to catch up quickly.
ChatGPT and WriteSonic do an excellent job of quickly generating ideas. These should be the starting point, not the entire point. Ideas and inspiration have traditionally come from anywhere. It has always been up to the creators to find ways to make these ideas their own instead of copying them.
Will humans push out genuinely unique music, art, literature, and design works in the future? Will we become lazy in this regard, too? And if we let the robots do the heavy lifting, will the new books and movies only be rephrased versions of the past, just like the motivational quotes above?
Creativity is already lacking in society today. Look no further than the steady stream of reboots and remakes. And producers wanting to protect their investments place "safe bets" on franchises with devoted followings. It won't be long before we are subjected to Toy Story 15.
I still have hope that raw human creativity will find ways to not only survive but thrive with artificial intelligence. Look closely at this picture of William Shakespeare. Deep Dream Generator drew this for me - also in a hot minute. Check out the layered hands and extra fingers. It's refreshing to see that even robots struggle to get their hands right. They need our help, too.
Why did I select Shakespeare for the image to go with this article? Because although many stories today are inspired by and built on the ones he wrote 400+ years ago, some think that Shakespeare never wrote a single word. The real work could have been done behind the scenes by a person, or people, who wanted to remain anonymous. So, his byline may be meaningless.
Robot creations, copyrights, and credit aside, I hope you find the people who understand and celebrate you. There are 25 excellent quotes up there to inspire you to go where people value you. (And if you can't find them, make it easier for them to find you.) Trust me, they exist. Even the robots know that.
Go forward, my friends.
Be Interesting.
