Creativity blossoms in the open mode

Creativity blossoms in the open mode

As our environment becomes increasingly shaped by #artificialintelligence, thriving requires not only technical proficiency but also a set of #metaskills that encompass #adaptability, #critical thinking, #emotionalintelligence, and #creativity. The synergy between creativity and meta-skills becomes increasingly important as we adapt - this is where John Cleese comes in.

John Cleese, renowned English actor, comedian, writer, and film producer, best known for his involvement in the comedy group #MontyPython, shared his perspective and research on the importance of #creativityinmanagement, a video he did in 1991 that is perfectly relevant to our road ahead.

His points on creativity resonated so much with me that I wanted to share them with you. Cleese's perspective leverages research from renowned psychologists such as #DonaldMacKinnon, #BrianBates, and #RobinSkynner. See what you think.

1- Creativity as a Way of Operating

Dispelling the myth that creativity is a talent, Cleese unveiled a profound truth: creativity is a way of operating. MacKinnon's research revealed that the most creative minds had mastered the art of getting into a particular mood that resembled childlike play. It was about exploring ideas for the sheer joy of it, unburdened by immediate practical concerns.

2- The Open and Closed Modes

In his collaboration with Dr. Robin Skynner, Cleese dissected the functioning of psychologically healthy families and successful organizations. He introduced the concept of open and closed modes. Creativity, he asserted, blossoms in the open mode—a relaxed, expansive state where curiosity thrives. In contrast, the closed mode, dominated by urgency and purpose, stifles creativity.

3- Creating the Oasis

How does one step into the open mode? Cleese prescribed five essential elements: space, time, time (yes, twice), confidence, and with a touch of humor. Creating an "oasis of quiet" involves carving out undisturbed space and specific time, allowing the mind to transcend the everyday closed mode.

4- The Role of Time and Confidence

Cleese underscored the significance of time, urging individuals to give their minds ample time to ponder problems. Creativity, he argued, flourishes when individuals tolerate the discomfort of not having an immediate solution. Confidence played a crucial role, with fear of making mistakes identified as a chief impediment to creative thinking.

5- Humor: Catalyst for Spontaneity

As Cleese dissected the anatomy of creativity, he celebrated the role of humor. Humor, he proposed, hastens the transition from the closed to the open mode. It lightens the atmosphere, fostering spontaneity and playfulness—essential components of the creative process.

6- Divergent Thinking Unveiled

Central to Cleese's perspective on creativity was the concept of divergent thinking—a cognitive process that stretches beyond conventional boundaries to explore many ideas. He championed the importance of generating many ideas and embracing flexibility and open-mindedness to nurture creativity.
