The 2023 Contagious Pioneers list naming the best agencies on the planet is out today.?

We pick our Pioneer agencies by reviewing all the work that was published on our Contagious IQ online platform in the prior 12 months, and then assigning agencies a score based on how many campaigns they had featured and a few other metrics.

In December, Contagious managing partner Alex Jenkins summarised the year just gone by saying that he believed there had been ‘a nearly complete lack of visually iconic work’ in 2022.

That may seem like an uncharitable thing to bring up at this juncture, but no one’s credibility (least of all ours) is preserved by ignoring reality.?Besides, addressing a slump in visually memorable work does nothing to diminish the achievements of this year’s Pioneer agencies. Plenty of innovative, effective and impactful campaigns still got made in 2022, and we did not need to lower our standards to accommodate lesser work on Contagious IQ.

The only real difference is that this year the winning agencies made it through our filters and outperformed their peers while also dealing with whatever economic malaise, societal angst or media disruption contributed to the dearth of iconic work, and that’s to their credit.

Beating a path through hostile environments is what being a Pioneer is all about, after all.
