The Creative Now
So I am asking, with the purpose of sharing, and of supporting and caring for this creative community in its current, uncertain reality. I asked what people are doing, how they are feeling, how they are sparking creativity. It feels important to share what we do, when we can’t do all our doing.????
Reaching out first to some of 200-ish the talented people I’ve had the good fortune to profile though the @capitolcommunicator portrait series. It’s my version of a virtual dinner table of sorts. Grab a chair.

What, if anything, are you doing differently?
Oddly, I have found myself occupying almost all of my quarantine time doing something creative and it’s been refreshing and reinvigorating to the body and soul and hopefully I can aim this same new lens to business…when it returns.
Spang has been working on video messages for local causes, the most recent and relevant is a video for the Richmond Restaurants United, directed by Jordan Rodericks. It’s a beautifully crafted and edited piece that features various RVA restaurant owners talking to the camera with a clear plea for government assistance.
Are you staying creatively active?
Personally, I’ve turned inward at home to be creative with my family, which can mean inventing new dishes together, writing music on guitar with my son, Spencer who is home from college, watching him paint large canvases in our empty studio, chalk design painting an old piece of furniture or even painting a fence in our yard. I do love manual labor so having this time to catch up on projects with the spring sun on my back is tops! I’m also writing and concepting creative messaging about Spang that can build our social presence and have us ready to hit the ground running when the quarantine lifts.
How are you sparking yourself creatively?
We are still working with some clients virtually and we have designed a way to accomplish small studio shoots while our clients supervise remotely from their homes. It’s always interesting to me to observe the creative genius that is born of necessity!
